Hello.

Anyone here either taking or has taken MSc in Computer Science at UVic?

I've read the program overview as written on this webpage:
https://www.uvic.ca/engineering/computerscience/graduate/masters/index.php

There are Msc Thesis, MSc Project, and MSc Industrial.
I'm career oriented and want to continue working again after finishing graduate school so from a glance both Project and Industrial options seems suitable for me,
but what are the differences between the two?
Does either of them requires me to contact a professor first before applying?
I want to see which of them that suits me the most.

Thanks in advance.

hi
Uvic is competitive and selective when it comes to international students( same as the 2 other BC schools). If you are looking for an industrial oriented course, I would recommend you to apply to Industrial option as you would be able to do few co-op terms as well. You must contact a professor and get his/her recommendation before applying as applying without a supervisor can be waste of money and time. I don't want to discourage you, but this fall people are really regretting applying there as there are no supervisors available for them. All the best!!

You don't need a supervisor in advance for the industrial option. They assign one supervisor to all the industrial students after admissions.

email the department if you have a doubt about that. The guys who got admit this year, had a supervisor ,only later considered for admission.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. Looks like I'd better contact the department, then.

So, Msc Project and Msc Industrial are basically the same, only that the latter is a co-op program and of course industry-oriented hence the name, then?
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Do you mean UBC and SFU?

Yes, if you go with thesis option, you would not be able to enroll for co-op. Yes UBC and SFU, can't go wrong with any of theseschools. All the best!!

Not true. I got an admit to the Ms CS industrial program without contacting any supervisor in advance.

Even i got admit without contacting a professor, but it is very rare. It is more advisable to contact a professor to be on a safe side or else professors have to pick a file from a pool of applicants(which can prolong the wait , matters on luck and need a very strong profile ).
