Canada has agreements with US that allow a reciprocal recognition of each other's drivers licences. This means that if you come from US, you will be able to quickly obtain your new Ontario licence in a simple swap without having to take a road test or written test.

Written test is mandatory cause Canada have its own set of rules like demerit points.

Trick,

You DON'T need to pass any written test. I moved from the US too to Ontario and all I had to do to get the license swapped was get a Driving Certificate from the Motor Vehicle office in the US (very easy to obtain), present it to the License Office in Ontario, fill out the form, show residency and address proof and pay the fee. Make sure you read about all the requirements on Ontario.ca. FYI...Getting Driving Certificate is mandatory to prove that you were indeed a license holder in the US and it is also required to show if you had any traffic violations in the US. Hope it clarifies.

PS: They will keep your US license after issuing Canadian license.

On a side note, make sure you get letter(s) from your insurance company(ies) too that show that you had clean record. This will help you get better insurance rate in Ontario. The insurance rate is ridiculously high in Ontario and if you don't present letter from the US insurance companies, you will be treated as a new a driver and your yearly premium may hit as high as $4000 or even more. Also, Canadian insurance companies will only take your last 3 years driving history into consideration.

Do your research, read online forums and then come prepared to Canada.

Good luck!

Trick, yes you can. That's what I did too. I'd also applied from Canada. You can either call them or go to their (DMV) website (Search Google for website name). Either way, you'll have to fill out a form and send it over to them. There is a specific fee ($30 OR $40, don't remember exactly) that you will have to pay. The request usually goes to their Archive department and therefore they charge a fee to pull historical records. They will mail (by post) the letter to you on your Canadian address.

To get letter(s) from your insurance companies (highly recommended), you only need to call them and provide your policy number and they will email you a scanned copy of your records (basically just a letter). Insurance letters only tell that you did or didn't file for any claim. Based on your insurance letters (if you had good history), you will get good rates here in Canada.

Hope it helps!! Good Luck!
