Hello there

Me and family acquired PR in Dec 2016. Unfortunately, my wife has to abandon her PR in order to accept a scholarship from our home country. Questions I have i hope you can help me with:

1) Would she face any issues applying and getting a visitor visa after she abandon her PR card?
2) Can she apply for a work permit through me?
3) What is the best course of action for her to legally stay in Canada?

Thanks so much!

1) No - she shouldn't have issues obtaining a visitor visa.
2) She won't qualify for a work permit through you unless you apply to sponsor her for PR using the inland method. Both of you need to be in Canada for this application and the OWP will be issued approximately four months after you submit the inland sponsorship application.

Is there no way to get the scholarship without abandoning PR?? She is still considered a Citizen of the country who is giving out the scholarship right??

I agree. OP, I would recommend you and your wife think long and hard before renouncing PR status.

We wish there is another way around it. They require her to show a valid work permit throughout the scholarship period and it is something she worked very hard to obtain. We can always reapply for PR later, but she can't get this scholarship again!

PR card is valid in lieu of a work permit!! In which country do they require her to show the valid work permit for??

Can you share any more detail? This seems like an unusual situation, and I'd love to know what Country/Scholarship this is.

Why does a citizen need to show a work permit?
