I am pregnant, due in January 2013. I have already sent my passport for PR visa stamping. The office has been informed about my pregnancy from the beginning. The issues are:

1) If I get my passport back in next week weeks and I travel to Canada my delivery expenses will not be covered due to 3 months waiting period.
2) My pregnancy and delivery are covered by my private Australian health insurance.

Questions:
1) Should I deliver in Ontario and bear the expenses?
2) Should I deliver in Australia and then move to Ontario? Will I need to apply for PR visa for my new born? What is the process and how long does that take?

Please help.
Regards.

My wife is expecting our first child in December, she's currently here with me on a VR (just applied for an extension, hopefully it'll be granted!). Like you, she doesn't qualify for health insurance and no private company will cover pregnancy and childbirth. We've opted to go with a midwife, as midwifery services here in Ontario are free. We have to pay for lab work, ultrasounds, etc., but the appointments with the midwife cost us nothing. We're planning on a home birth if at all possible, and as long as all goes well, we shouldn't have to transfer to the hospital. If we do, however, the "normal" cost for a hospital birth is something in the neighbourhood of $3000, a c-section runs about $5,000, so we'd just have to pony up. Better to have her here, for us to be together at that time, I think.

I believe most provinces, if not all, offer free midwifery care. I should tell you though, they're often all booked up, so if you want to look into that option, you'd best get on it right away.

All the best!

One thing is there If child takes birth on Canadian land, he becomes Canadian and get citizenship right away.

Hi

We have a similar situation..we received our VISA in Feb 2012 but my wife was expecting in MARCH 2012..so we decided to travel after New Borns birth and VISA. Please find answers on my exp.

1) Should I deliver in Ontario and bear the expenses?
upto you if you can are fiancially comfortable in bearing the expenses as normal delivery might cost 3000-3500 CAD and c-Sec 5000 CAD.

2) Should I deliver in Australia and then move to Ontario? Will I need to apply for PR visa for my new born? What is the process and how long does that take?
This was our call to have delivery in own country but drawback was we had to get medicals and PR stamping again for my son (PR stamping again for entire family)..we applied for his VISA on 04th June 2012 and on 14Aug 2012 we received request for his Medicals...It would delay the process...

All the best :)

If the father is a Canadian citizen, the child will be a Canadian citizen even if born in Australia (in most cases). Is the father a Canadian citizen? If so, was he born in Canada or abroad?
If the child is automatically a Canadian citizen, you don't need to apply for a PR visa for him. You do have to get proof he is a Canadian citizen.

Just google midwifery services in your area of Ontario. :)
