A Question about Transit Visa

Hi everyone,

I have just learnt about the transit visa requirement. I will be traveling from U.S.A to Turkey. I need to catch the connection flight which will take me to Turkey from Toronto. I've applied for the transit visa via online and they returned me by asking for my original passport. I believe there won't be enough time to mail the passport to NYC, get the visa, and get the passport back via mail again. So I wonder what would happen if I arrive Toronto airport without a transit visa? My flight will arrive Toronto at 1pm and the connection flight is at 4pm so I just need to wait for 4 hours. I know there are several questions like this one but I was not able to notice a question like this asking about arriving to Toronto airport without a transit visa. Do they refuse me to enter to the airport if I show my passport, j1 visa for USA, and my flight tickets?

Usually the flight crew makes sure you have the proper visas for making the connection, if you don't have it you won't be allowed to board the flight from US to Canada.

If the flight crew didn't check your passport before boarding then when you want to go through immigration in Toronto to catch the next flight you won't be allowed to proceed.

My suggestion is to change your flight routing so that you transit a country not requiring you to hold a transit visa. The airline isn't going to board you. If they do and you get to Canada then CBSA will fine them. There may be also an added complication of being inadmissible for not holding the correct documentation. CBSA will either get you returned to the US or moved on to Turkey - they want you gone out of Canada so why prevent you leaving...its just that it won't be under your control!

Thank you for the information. I am going to change my flight route. United airlines allows me to change the route in the same day of my actual flight with a 75$ fee, which seems more logical than having a visa to transit from Canada.
