Got my Permanent Resident card.... i think?

I was under the impression that it was to be issued as a separate, hard card that you carry in your wallet.

Im Irish, living in Canada since March 2009. Applied for PR Sept 2010, OUTLAND processing through London.

In January they approved my PR and asked for my Passport. Hooray, and all that.

However, after sending my Passport off, I have received it back with a plastic, flexible VISA stuck inside on one page.
Its yellow, I'm listed as Category IM-1, IMMIGRANT, and nowhere is there the phrase 'Permanent Resident'.
On it it lists the Date of Issue as 15/-3/2011 and the EXPIRY as 06/07/2011.....!? (is this to do with the passage of my passport from Canada to UK and back???)

Included in th envelope is the form IMM5292.
On it it has the same dates!!

This has my photo, and a place to sign, as well as somewhere for the IMM. Office to sign.

No sign of a card anywhere, and wtf is meant by expiry date 06 JULY 2011?????

Have you "landed" yet?
When they request your passport they put a visa in it (or from what I hear) and then when you go to the border they will know you are landing as an immigrant. After you land you will give them an address in Canada to mail the PR card to. It should then take 4-6 weeks to get.

P.S. The PR card is a separate card. Here is a video about it: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/department/media/multimedia/video/pr-card/pr-card.asp

This is only your visa You have to get out and enter Canada again before this date (Flagpole if u wish) after entering through the border they will finnish the process and you will be a landed immigrant and they will send your PR by mail in about 6 weeks.

So thats not your PR its your Visa maybe some1 more familiar with the process of flagpoling will help u out .

Congrats !!

No no - I applied OUTLAND, but I've been in Canada the whole time.

So wait....
I sent off my passport;
They put a visa in it, and included the IMM 5292 that must be filled out by the IO...
I go with the passport and 5292 to the nearest CIC processing center...Pearson Airport??
I queue, give to an IO, they stamp, sign and SIX MORE $%&@#ing weeks from now I get the PR card????

I am aware you applied outland. But yes, you need to either flagpole at the border and "land" or request to land at a local CIC office which could take longer. And it is taking closer to 4 weeks to get the card.

Im not sure if you can go to the airport to do this I read some cases where people go to the american border (you dont need an american visa) you just tell the IO that your flagpoling.

Because you applied outland while staying inland you have to do this otherwise if you where out of Canada this process would have been done at the airport u land in.

You can possibly land at the CIC office in your town or the nearest one to it. You would have to go and ask them if that is possible or call the call centre but from what I have heard, there is usually a bit of a wait to get an appointment.

Your other option is to leave Canada and come back. For most people it would be easier to drive to the border to the US and come back that way but if you prefer, you can fly somewhere and land when you come back.

You must land before July 6 or your visa will have expired and you would have to apply again from scratch.

Here is another thread you might want to take a look at:

You need to officially land.

I am in same position as you. Applied outland, sent my passport to london from canada, just waiting to get it back with the one entry visa so I can land.

Go to the border and re-enter canada. There are loads of posts and threads about it on this forum. Once you "land" you will get your PR card in the mail about 6 weeks later. You are a Permanent resident as soon as you land, don't need to wait for PR card. Also as soon as you have landed, you can get your SIN from any service canada. They will generate a SIN for you and you'll get a SIN card about a week later. You can also apply for OHIP once you've landed.

And congratulations on being approved!

Thanks everyone :)

so, after calling CIC and Service Canada:

1. I need to flagpole.
As I am in Toronto, this means a trip to Niagara Falls (via Bus :/ ) Any suggestions welcome! Also, which exact Border Crossing should I use?

2. Service Canada would accept my COPR, but there is no mention that it needs to be signed & stamped. I've a feeling it does, but Ill try today anyway.

This would be the best and easiest way to do it , any border crossing is fine so Niagara/buffalo would be the closest option since your in Toronto ...look at it this way you can also celebrate at a casino there !! :)

Congrats again
