1) Does the sponsor need to do a police clearance too?
2) If I am only sponsoring my spouse, do her siblings need to do a medical too? I wasn't clear what it meant by family members.
3) Does it make sense to leave the medical for the last step since it has a 1 year validity?
4) Can anyone help me understand how Part 3. Information Guides works in the outland application? I'm just confused as to which papers from that 33 page document we need to fill out. Is it only the ones relevant to our country?

Thank you!

Hey, JR.

1. Nope. Just the applicant looking for PR.

2. Only the person getting PR, e.g. your spouse, need a medical.

3. I would definitely do the medical close to when you are getting ready to submit, yes. Make sure you book it in advance. Some doctors take longer to get in to see than others, and like you probably know, they need to be a panel physician.

4. I'm going to have to look and see what guide you're referring to. You simply fill out the outland forms, and then follow directions for things like photos, etc. specific to your country.

1 and 2. The police clearance and medical exams are for the principal applicant only.
3. Yes, you can wait for CIC to request for the medical but this may cause a bit of delay. If you want to expedite the processing of your sponsorship, you may want to do this upfront.
4. I'm not entirely sure about this as you didn't mention which country you're from.

Anyway hope this helps. Good luck!

Check the validity of the police clearance certificates. I did mine nice and early (needed to do two different countries.) By the time I got my **** together and was just about ready to submit my application I looked again at my PC certs and realised they were only valid for 3 months and needed to be done again.

Thank you all for the answers. Sorry forgot to mention, we are living in Dubai, so would need the form related to the Middle East, which only has a section for Abu Dhabi as that's the closest city to us in the UAE. I assume that's the right form.

Regarding the medical, so if I understand it correctly, we will be given a confirmation form that the medical is done which we then send across with the application package, and the clinic will upload the results to the CIC system, so by the time they receive our pack they will have the results to cross check? Also, does the UCI number (I think that's what it was) need to be mentioned anywhere on our form?

Please let me know about that Part 3 form. It's almost the last thing I am not entirely sure about.

One more question, if a specific form is not relevant to us, say the Use of Representative form, do we simply not include it in the application pack?

@acfajardo - you are from the Manila office I see. My wife is from the Philippines, can you shed any light on the police clearance process if we live overseas? Does she need to update her status with the consulate here before we can get one?

I was living in the UAE when I submitted my application. As a UK citizen I submitted documents as per the UK specification in "Part 3: Country Specific Instructions" and not those for the UAE.

I got my medical done at on of the CIC approved clinics on Jumeirah Beach Road. They told me what I needed to bring when I made my appointment and they sent the details to CIC. I can't remember if I also sent something - sorry.

Getting a police clearance certificate in the UAE is simple, although you can't just wander into amy police station to get one. I've heard it's about AED 200 and overnight in Dubai. I lived in RAK and although I had a Dubai visa I went to the police station in RAK, paid about AED 55 and walked out with my certificate about 15 mins later.

Thanks Taddy. We applied for it online yesterday and will be picking it up from a police station soon, although they mentioned something online about having it certified from the ministry of foreign affairs and UAE embassy of home country. Did you have to do that?

About the "Part 3: Country Specific Instructions", I'm hesitant to do them for the Philippines as it mentions in the instructions to 'follow specific instructions depending on where they live'.. which would mean we fill the UAE forms, right? I checked the Philippines document and it says 'instructions for applications to be processed in Manila, Philippines'.. I just don't want to give them a reason to send back the papers if this is the wrong one.

Question about photocopies - for documents like copy of my passport, marriage certificate, etc. when it says to send a photocopy, does it mean literally just a photocopy, or does it need to be notarized/certified etc. Keep in mind all our documents are in English.

literally black and white photocopy from staples or your printer. Only copy that needs to be original is Police certificate.

No, I didn't get my police clearance certificates certified (surely the fact they've come from the POLICE should be enough :D )

Thanks all. I'm still very confused about the Part 3: Immigrants guide, and how it related to the principal applicant checklist.

Since we live in the UAE, we need to use the Abu Dhabi section, which is the final 2 pages (33,34) of that document. Nowhere there does it say that we need to include identity or civil status documents, or travel documents and passports. Do you know if we still need to include these? And are only the last 2 pages of that document the ones that would be relevant to our case?

Would it just be safer to include my spouse's passport copies and/or birth certificate?

Incorrect. According to the OP's regional guide: Send notarized photocopies of all other documents.

The checklist is pretty clear: IDENTITY AND CIVIL STATUS DOCUMENTS
Provide the following:
• birth certificates,
• baptismal certificates or,
• other official document confirming relationship for you and each of your family members

For the country specific instructions I followed the checklist for the country I was from not the country I was living in.

The beginning of Part 3 also applies to your case. So yes, you have to provide what they ask for in the beginning, and it does say notarized photocopies unless otherwise noted.
It also asks for civil status documents and a copy of the passport.

The headings of many of the pages in the middle indicate which country they apply to, so most of them are not needed for your case. The ones that say Abu Dhabi or UAE are needed, though.

CIC can choose to process the application in the country of residence or the country of nationality. However, if you send in what is requested for the UAE, it should be fine even if they decide to process in Manila. If anything was missing, they would just request it later. It looks like the requirements are more stringent for the UAE in any case.

Do you foresee any issues if we choose the Manila location, since that's where my wife is from?

Also, in case we go ahead with the UAE version, it says notarized photocopies at the top, but later on when referring to particular documents, it mentions just photocopies. Would that mean notarized?
