I'm currently on an implied status for my PGWP. I have a son who just turned 18 years old and I just applied for his study permit extension as well; so we're both on implied status. Can he now work part-time? Even on implied status?

When he came last year to Canada, he was 17 yo and he didn't work because that's what we're told - international students of minor age cannot work.

He isn’t allowed to work unless he has been attending college/university. If he gets a study permit extension and attends college/university he can start working part-time 20 hr/week once his classes start.

There is no way for him to legally work under the current circumstances. You were told correctly last year and he still cannot work now.

He would need to obtain his own study permit to attend a college or university full time AND also start that program in order to be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week.

Until that happens, he's out of luck and cannot work.

Thank you for clarifying. I thought we just had to wait til he's 18 and he can work. He'll in 12th grade this Sept 2020. He'll have to wait til next year. Thanks!

Unfortunately your understanding is incorrect. He cannot work until he is studying at the college or university level. International high school students are not entitled to work.

Hi, I know it’s too late for a reply, I just have a question since I have the same circumstance with your child. I also have a dependent student permit because I was 17 yo when I got here, but now i am 18, and i don't know if i will apply to be a independent study permit holder or to just extend my dependent study permit.

What were the processes look like? After he turned 18, Did he applied for an independent student permit or did he applied for an extension?

It would be a great help to know, Thank you!

Are you still in high school? Have you graduated? If graduated, then needs admission to post secondary institution to apply for a new study permit not tied to parent.

Not about age it’s about level of schooling currently attending.
