Hi, my wife's signed up to the Pacific Institute of Culinary Arts for January 2016. How long before should we apply for the study permit? Also we hope that after the course she will get a pgwp and eventually gain PR. For this reason we would like to ship all our furniture over there as we have a lot of expensive furniture and it would be a shame to have to sell it all and start over from new. Has anyone shipped their stuff over and could tell me what kind of costs we are looking at? Also we have a dog and 2 cats which we intend to take with us, has anyone had any experience with taking pets over?

She can apply for the study permit at any time.

Shipping furniture is expensive. How much it will cost depends on how much you plan to ship - however I would expect it will cost you a few thousand dollars.

There are strict procedure that must be followed when bringing pets into the country. You can read more about this here:

http://www.inspection.gc.ca/animals/terrestrial-animals/imports/policies/live-animals/pets/eng/1326600389775/1326600500578

Note that there is no guarantee you will be able to get an open work permit based on her study permit. You can certainly apply - however approval is unfortunately not guaranteed.

Thanks for your reply. I'm not too concerned whether I get a work permit or not as I already own my own internet based business which I intend to carry on running once we get there.
