Hello all,

A family member of mine will be living with us in Brampton and their school is 2.5 hours away in Scarborough by transit (Centennial college). It would be both incredibly expensive (transit) and incredibly time consuming to go to this school and they have no other family besides us here in Canada.

Ideally we would like for them to be able to transfer to school in either Brampton or Mississauga, but we've been told that it is extremely difficult to transfer from Cenennial to other schools as they have agreements in place to not allow transfers of this nature. We've also been told Centennial will only refund your money to the original account it came from, which will make you get hit with wire transfer/foreign exchange fees.

If anyone can point us in the right direction of what our options are and what next steps we could take that would be great. Thank you!

It would be expensive for them and they would be by themselves in Scarborough. It would be preferable if they could stay with us in Brampton in a stable environment with family, especially if there is any type of emergency (medical, etc).

Is your family member in Canada studying yet? If not and changing DLI, then the person will need a new study permit for the school in Brampton.

And for refund policy, it's up to the collage/school to set it. If this is such a big issue, and you are determine to change school to one closer to your home, then be prepared to pay for the cost.

So your family member needs to attend one semester or a year at Centennial, and then can transfer to a Brampton DLI.

Okay, that makes sense. In a worst case scenario I guess this is what we will have to do.

Got it, thanks. We are fine with the associated costs, it would be nice to know what the costs are ahead of time.

If your family member does not complete at least one semester at the original school, they need to apply for a new study permit.

Fees rules are all posted on the school websites. You can read there was refund policies and fees / penalties are.

It may be hard for your family for the 5 hours daily commute to do well in that one semester ... so be prepared.

1. Your family member must be attending Centennial and studying, before s/he can apply for a change DLI. to a new school.
