90 day visa waiver

Im not sure im writing this in the correct spot but hopefully someone can give me some advice on this.
I am in Canada on an open work permit which expires on June 8th.
I am driving down to the states on a visa waiver and will be back in Canada mid to late May. I will then book my appointment with the US consulate to get my B2 visitor visa.
My question is, what happens if my OWP expires before the consulate has given me my B2 visa? I can't just go home to UK because the consulate will have my passport.

Any one have any ideas ?

Maybe extend your stay as a visitor before your work permit expires http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/extend-stay.asp#extend

yes you can extend your stay as visitor. I will be doing the same in month of May.
