No - you can't.

If you file without your spouse's IELTS results your application will be automatically refused.

Some Agents need to go and study the simple ielts calculations very well before they start misleading people. You can imagine if this forum does not exist...You would have been misled. Please apply quickly...if he does not cooperate you can get another agent. 1 or 2 points can be a million dollars in this case.

You agent's right, your score makes up 16 points for language. I argued the same with my agent after being misled by the forum members but this is not the correct way to calculate points.

No - you're wrong. It's not 16 points and that's not the way you calculate IELTS points. It's very clearly spelled out here on the official CIC web site.

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/language-testing.asp

Please don't mislead people with such bad information.

Are you sure? Most forum members use the conversion table on CIC website to calculate their points. I think the calcuation is clear and simple. it is based on the evaluation of the language proficiency in each capability and not the whole band of IELTS. I remember one case mentioned in this forum regarding someone who got a refusal because a CIC officer calculated wrongly his IELTS score as 20 points instead of 21 points, so he got 66 points in total instead of 67. but he applied again with a cover letter explaining the wrong calculation of IELTS score based on the conversion table itself. As a result, CIC responded effectively correcting the mistake and giving him PER.

I know the majority calculates it this way but even logically this doesn't seem right. Also check out this link

http://www.ieltsessentials.com/clb/index.html

The minimum you scored in any of your ielt's part decides the CLB level.

For e.g. This is my IELTS score
L 8
R 9
W 6.5
S 8

And my CLB level is 8 as per this table which means I get 20 points. Although the forum members say I get 24 points for this. Even I'm not sure. One of my colleagues and my agent explained to me that the minimum you score in any of your ielt's part decides the CLB level.

Why do you need to listen to other people? Can't you simply go to CIC's website (mentioned below and in FSW guideline), read for yourself how IELTS points are calculated and then calculate the points yourself? There is no confusion about this. It is VERY clear that the points are calculated based on individual IELTS score and not the overall band. Please read CIC's guidelines thoroughly before coming back to spread confusion where there is none!

Conversion of IELTS score to CLB level: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/language-testing.asp
Conversion of CLB level to points: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/factor-language.asp

Also, it infuriates me that consultants charge money and yet don't know enough about the application process!

Please stop. Your method of calculating points is completely wrong. Again, read the CIC web site. This is the official source and the process is extremely clearly laid out there.
