Hi Everyone,
I got admission in Centennial College for Biotechnology Technician Fast Track Program. My question is If I finish that 2 year course in 1 year will I get 3 year work permit or 1 year work permit? By certificate will show as 2 year course (Fast Track). What say you guys?

It is official that its a 1 year Fast track program so answer should be 1 year work permit, its not about how many Semesters are supposed to be, but how many you attend. PGWP is provided based on 2 semsters/8 months-4 semesters/16 months of studies. Secondly how many Credits/Credit Hours are you getting for whole year?

By getting positive LMO from your current employer or by going for another 1 year course (without breaks if possible and without applying for 1 year PGWP as PGWP is only issued once per person).

Or by getting married to a Canadian Citizen or PR ;).

I don't know to what extent does our credit hours count towards out work permit but as per 2 threads that I read recently and experience of one guy it seem at times that credit hours matters but not sure. As it was an isolated case where a guy who finished 2 year program got 1 year pgwp. Wait I will give you link of that thread.

PS. Check this link, most of the data is bought together by enfield, so kudos to him.

the guy who got one year work permit is extremely rare case which can be conveniently ignored because this guy mentions that all of his friends from same college, same course , of 2 years got 3 years work permit.. his form might have got some printing error or some gone case..

Totally possible thats why I said not sure. Let me just edit that part so that no one else is misguided on mere speculation of ours.

Hi,

Actually this member was very smart :) . He mentioned everything except one “very important thing”. If it was the same course with equal number of subjects.

Here I quote his post;

“Hi,

I studied in centennial college for 2 year Post Graduate program and applied for Post Grad Work permit by paper application . Unfortunately i got 1 year work permit instead of 3 years.....and rest of my friends got 3 years.....on same college letter.....and same application form ...as we all filled the form together.....could anyone suggest my what should be my next step?....
"

See, he did not mention anything about being “same/different course”. And when I asked him the same question, he simply ignored me. You can even check my very post on his thread. It’s clearly not a rare case but more a matter of insufficient credit hours.

I do not think if it’s ‘extremely rare case which can be conveniently ignored’. I can give you one example. My elder sister did her MBA in 15 months with full 57 credit hours and got 3 year PGWP. The minimum time to complete the same program was only 11 months (with maximum time is around 18 months). She even told me that there was one Pakistani student who in fact done his MBA in 11 months with 57 credit hours and got a full 3 year PGWP. You need 120 credit hours for a 4 year undergraduate program. I am not sure about Master degree program, but I believe its 45 credit hours that’s makes it complete for a 3 year PGWP.

@ enfield..

. I consider it extremely rare incidence given the fact the member who wrote it has written it very smartly ( AS YOU WROTE IN YOUR REPLY ) . we never know the real reasons..why he got the 1 year permit.

well, isn't it safe to go by majority of posts following normal distribution ( statisitical term); ( where students in 2 year courses got 3 year permits) than relying on a post that was apparently written SMARTLY

this is my personal opinion, not an expert opinion ..

Hi,

The course to which i applied is Game development- Advanced programming of 1 year(3 semesters) in sheridan and it covers 60 credit hours. So after this course will i get 3 years of PGWP. I read on this forum one member get 3 yrs of PGWP after 1 year course but i dont know abt his credit hourse/course. Or i will have to do another 1 yr course.

Check out this link:

What u say guys?

@ enfield and ad singh, I agree to both of you, but I would still advice people going for 2 back 2 back courses to take care with Credits. I will give an example, see the course below that I chose, its marketing mgmt from Humber and it doesn't even give credits for 6 courses from its curriculum. Now if by any chance a person chooses this plus another course like this there "might" be a possibility of getting screwed as this course only fetches 16 credits which is wayy too less even for a 1 year course.

But then I even agree to the point that the way that guy was describing things it was very weird of him to ignore enfields post and just mentioning the course as "same as his friends" so this point doesn't have a proper conclusion and shall be ignored.

I am changing my course to one of my favorite one and the one I specialize in which I couldn't go for earlier with the fear of study mismatch :).

I am not sure if this is the right thread to ask this question but I am in a dilemma. I am planning to do two separate courses of 1 year each back to back, possibly from the same college/university, however, the confusion that there is in my mind is that whether I will get a PGWP of 2 years or 3 years!! If the courses are of 8 months each and if they are of 12 months, will there be any difference? I hope I am clear with the question!

Opt for a two year program. That way you don't have to worry about the length of PGWP.

My choices are limited if I look at 2-year programs in the field of Marketing. Also, keeping in mind the fact that I hold a 3-year Bachelors degree would narrow down my search even more. Anyway, thank you for the suggestion @meister !
