Hello,

We're looking at moving to Ontario around September and I was wondering how the school system would work. I'm currently in my final few months of school and I'm taking my GCSEs in May/June - I'll have my results for when we're moving. If I go back to high school once I've moved would I be entering in at grade 11? Which month would I start? Also, I was looking at taking A Level English Literature, Geology, Economics and Mathematics in Britain - how would I go about taking these in Canada? I know you can't take A Levels but are there any equivalents? Which subjects would be compulsory to take?

Most 16 year olds are in grade 11 in Canada. There are 2 main streams (levels) Academic (A levels) and Applied (there is also a University Prep level which is regarded as Advanced ++).

Ontario requires you to pass a Literacy test which is usually done in Grade 10, but just has to be completed prior to graduation and also you need to complete 40 hours of volunteer work to graduate - yes even if you come into the system in technically your last year.

The public/private school systems here are opposite to what you call them in Britain. Private is where you pay additional money and public is where the majority of students attend.

Most High Schools are semestered. The beginning of the school year is September with semester 1 and the second semester starts around February 1st (approx) and ends the end of June.

School attendance is determined by where you live - its broken down by geographic boundaries. If you want to attend a school outside of her designated areas, you have to apply to the other school and get written approval by the principal of the 'home' (designated) school, the school you want to attend to and the area educational superintendent.

If the school outside of your area is full (at capacity) they can decline your admission.

If you want to attend a private school you can apply anywhere (are not limited by geography) however you will pay for it. Most start at 15k per school year and can go considerably higher depending on the school.

Most students attend in the 'public (non-Denominational)' or 'separate (Catholic)' school system, which is free and available to all eligible students. We pay for supporting the public or separate school system through our taxes. If you attend private schools you still support the above through your taxes.

I'm definitely looking at going back to school but would it be compulsory to do so since I would of graduated from high school with qualifications? Would my GCSE results account for any credits? For example if I have the following qualifications..

English Language GCSE - A
English Literature GCSE - A
Mathematics GCSE - B
Statistics GCSE - B
German GCSE - B
Core Science GCSE - A
Additional Science GCSE - B
History GCSE - B
BTEC Sport - Merit
BTEC Acting - Distinction

I don't have the definite answer.

If you're planning to go to College or University with your existing educational credentials you'll still need to see if they're equivalent. I don't see why you couldn't email all credentials to see what they say -- this is probably the best route for you to take.

Typically, I believe, A levels are very similiar to grade 12 in Canada, but you need to verify this.

You can apply to some universities and see if you get accepted. If not, then you can talk to some high schools and ask if you can do grade 12.

Before you apply to the Universities, select 1 or 2 and contact their Admissions Dept to confirm how your educational credentials will be received. This will save you time and possible disappointment.

Grade 12 students here typically start applying to University/College in the December timeframe frame (there is about a 6-8 week application period). Some will send early acceptances based on Grade 11 grade averages and you'll hear back from all institutions by mid Spring to make your final decision. In Ontario you apply to a central body that handles all applications and your personal login will show you who you've applied to and provides the ongoing status of all your applications.
