Hi folks,

If I have completed 1560 hours in a year on a Study Permit, am I eligible to apply under the Federal Skilled Worker (Express Entry) scheme? Just to clarify that I do work as a research and teaching assistant (student employee) but I am not counting that. I am counting my hours at the same University where I am doing my PhD but as an admin staff (Staff Employee) and I have 1560 hours in one year. So do I qualify for Federal Skilled Worker (Express Entry)?

The second question is about continuity. I was hired in May 2022, so do I need to show these hours between Jan 1st to Dec 30, or it can be in a span of 365 days, irrespective of months?

Thirdly, there was a break of 15 days in the month of August this year, but I did work in the remaining 15 days of the month. So, will that be considered continuous or will be seen as a break during my work? Thank you

A 2 week break makes this work experience non-continuous. The work experience needs to be continous - meaning without breaks. You do not have to count from Jan to Dec, but it does need to be continuous. So if you worked at least 30 hours per week between May 2022 and May 2023, you would have a year of continuous work experience. If your hours were under 30 in some or all weeks, that makes the calculation a bit more complicated.

Oh I see; thanks for your reply.

But if I am able to complete 1560 hours on a study permit, am I eligible to apply?

If the work experience is continuous/without any breaks and you do the calculation correctly on the number of hours, including making sure you are not claiming anything where you worked over 30 hours per week, then I believe yes. Wait for others to respond.

I appreciate your reply.

My work gives monthly cheques which also have the hours written in it, so I guess calculation can be taken care of through that.

But I worked more than 30 in my summer breaks as I am eligible to. Does that defeat my eligibility under this scheme?

If you worked above 30 hours, you can't count the extra hours. That's not how it works.

This is how you do the calculation. For every week where you worked 30 hours or more, you count this as 1 week towards the 1 year experience. It doesn't matter how many hours you worked, it's still only counted as 1 week. For all of the weeks where you worked less than 30 hours, add up the total hours and then divide by 30. Add the first and second number together. If you get a total of 52 or more and your work experience is continuous, then you can claim the 1 year.
