Hi guys,

I was just wondering if anyone out there who has applied for Outland application and was able to stay in Canada during the entire process. If so, how did you "land"? My husband has been in Canada for about a year now (We extended his visitor's status once). As the expiration date for his visitor's status is nearing, I'm wondering what the likelihood of CIC approving the visitor's extension the second time around. He is from a visa-exempt country (Korea).

I'd like to hear your experiences and knowledge. Thank you kindly!

I applied inland, so no experience of my own to share. However, extensions seem pretty routinely granted (for both inland and outland applicants) for visa-exempt foreign nationals with no history of problems with immigration (no overstays or previous denials). As for landing, you can "flagpole" (drive to the nearest border crossing, driving into the U.S., tell them you want to "flagpole" to land as a PR, they'll deny entry, and you go straight back to Canada and land), or he can leave Canada by commercial travel and land upon his return.

For those applying outland you also have the option of booking a landing appointment at a CIC office, however the wait times can be quite long. You're likely better off just making a run for the border (depending how far you are, of course).

Thanks so much for your reply, we'll have to look into that once (and if) we are granted his visitor's extension/PR.

My spouse stayed in Canada the entire time while waiting for PR. We were living together as common-law the entire time.

After her application was approved they mailed the COPR directly to our address in Toronto (which was her home address listed in her application), and we just drove to Niagara Fall to do the landing at Rainbow Bridge USA border crossing.

My husband drove to Niagara for the landing as well. The wait time for a in-Canada appointment was several weeks (6?) and we couldn't be bothered to wait.

Hi guys,

I just noticed that the processing of the application for inland will take 19months all in all, and the outland will take 15 months.

Here's our case.

I arrived here in Canada, last October 2012 under the live in caregiver program. I have a valid work permit until September 2015. I recently got married last August 24, 2013. 23 weeks pregnant, i,m on EI and will have my ML by January 2014.

We're still gathering the documents needed before submitting the application, together with the OWP application.

Here's my questions that i hope someone can help me and advice me what to do. :)

1. What is the best move to take, is INLAND or OUTLAND?
2. If OUTLAND, can i still apply for OWP?
3. If INLAND, the initial assessment for the application is 11 months and the CIC is working NOVEMBER 2012 applications, what will be my status here in Canada if my work permit expires in SEPTEMBER 2015?
4. If apply INLAND, should I apply VISITOR'S VISA before the end of my work permit?
5. If OUTLAND, Do I need to go back in my home country?
6. What if. I will be able to find a employer here in Canada who will provide me LMO and will have a new work permit, can i stay here in Canada while waiting for the OWP and PR?

Please help and advice. Thank you.. :)

Thank you so much for sharing! How long was the entire process (from the day you filed)?

Thanks so much for sharing.. as for the process of landing, do you just go into US via border and come right out?

Only 4 months... but this was exceptionally fast and through a visa office that no longer exists today. You need to go by current times for your particular visa office, to get a realistic timeframe for your case.

My spouse was here first on a 1-year work visa, and when that expired she turned it into a 1-year study permit which she was under when we sent our application. So luckily we never had to go through another status renewal.

The process was different when my husband when through and those holding visa exempt passports still had to submit their passports for visa stamping. So my husband drove down to the Buffalo visa office and obtain his PR visa stamp first thing in the morning and then landed as a PR a few hours later.

Hi Lindt :)

My wife is doing exactly that...she's been staying with me as a visitor for years now (we've extended several times without issue) while her PR application has been in process. We applied back in March, she got her passport request a few weeks ago, so we're hoping it'll actually wrap up soon. then it'll be a trip to Niagara Falls for a day!.
