Poll paints Vancouver as less than friendly or inclusive

Vancouver prides itself in being one of the most liveable cities in the world, but a new study shows that it's not as friendly or inclusive as many residents might think.

The Vancouver Foundation surveyed 3,841 people across Metro Vancouver, both online and in telephone interviews, in April and May for its Connections and Engagement study.

“We found that one in four people are finding it difficult to make friends in Vancouver and one in three people are lonely,” Vancouver Foundation CEO Faye Wightman said Monday.

Wightman said it's important to address feelings of isolation and disconnection.

"Research has shown that you're actually going to be healthier if you get involved. By joining a club, you can expand your life by 50 per cent."

The study also revealed that 35 per cent of the respondents don't have any close friends from outside their own ethnic group. And 65 per cent prefer to spend their time with people who are just like them.

When asked which ethnic groups would be least welcome in their neighbourhoods, 39 per cent said everyone was welcome and 32 per cent refused to answer.

The rest cited Middle Easterners, South Asians, Africans and Asians as the least desirable neighbours.

“What we'd like to do over the summer is just try to get underneath that and figure out why,” Wightman said.

Most interviews took place in English, but when necessary interviews were also conducted in Cantonese, Mandarin or Punjabi, the foundation said on its website.

We moved to Canada at 1st of Ordibehesht (akharhaye sale tahsili) and this is what happened to my daughter:
1- We went to a center whose responsibility is evaluation of the child, with a prior appointment ofcourse.
2- They tested my child oraly and we were present at the time. My daughter didn't know English other than a few basic words. They don't care about your child's English skill.
3- The test was about some very basic math (I can't remember if there was anything else!), and they evaluated that my daughter can stay in the same grade as before. They gave us a letter to be able to register in a school. So my daughter finished grade seven at the same time as she were in Iran.
4- While in school, they spend time in special ESL classes inside the school. How much they spend in ESL during the day depends on their English level. They may spend full time or part time. If part time, they spend the rest of the day in regular classes along with their classmates. Again, depending on their progress and levels, this may take a few months or a few years. If your child is in primary or middle school, there should be no worry at all even if they spend 1-2 years full time in ESL. If they are in high school...I don't know about this, honestly but I have lots of friends whose children started in high school and did not have any problem. While they are learning English in school, there is no extra pressure on the child as extra homeworks and assignments.

Please note that when they evaluate your child, they may advise you that your child can go to a higher grade. This is your call and you need to make the decision on this. I would prefer that my child don't jump ahead because this is a good opportunity for him/her to learn English better and grow up normally.

مهیار جان وقتی پست ونوس عزیز رو در مورد سرد بودن مردم کانادا خوندم دقیقا این از فکرم گذشت که "خدا کنه این تعبیر از سردبودن مردم یک منطقه مثل همون چیزی باشه که من در مورد مردم اسکاندیناوی شنیده بودم و در برخورد باهاشون کاملا از بین رفت".
وقتی دیدم تو پست بعد دقیقا مقایسشون کردی خواستم تجربه شخصیم رو بهت بگم که در بین همه مردمان اروپای غربی که من باهاشون برخورد داشتم یا کار کردم مهربونترین، خوش برخوردترین و البته با پرستیژترینشون مردم اسکاندیناوی بودن! شرایط آب و هوایی منطقه جغرافیاییشون شاید کمی دپرس کننده یا دلگیرکننده باشه ولی مردمانشون بهیچوجه!​

در کل دنیا مردم کشورهای اسکاندیناوی به افسردگی و سردبودن در روابط اجتماعی معروف هستند من اگه خواستم مثالی بزنم مخصوصا از اونا استفاده کردم که بگم مردم کانادا از لحاظ روابط اجتماعی فوق العاده بالاتر هستند و قابل مقایسه با مردم کشورهای اسکاندیناوی نیستند تازه من آمارهای سطح زندگی رو که در کانادا نگاه میکنم جزء بهترین سطوح آماری اجتماعی در دنیا هستند و کشورهای اسکاندیناوی رتبه های کمتری دارن

منم دقیقا چون واقعیت رو متفاوت با چیزی که صرفا شنیده بودم تجربه کردم، بهت گفتم. برای خود من هم جالب بود!
البته سطح زندگی خوب و نسبتا ایده آلی دارن بخصوص نروژ بدلیل ذخایر نفت و صنعت شیلات، ولی در مقایسه با جاهای دیگه بخصوص کانادا اطلاع یا مطالعه ای ندارم.
یکبار تو انجمن قبلی از قول یک کارمند UN که از آشنایان و تبعه کانادا هست ولی بدلیل موقعیت شغلی تو اکثر کشورهای دنیا زندگی کرده گفتم، از نظر ایشون بعد از 30 سال خروج از ایران، کانادا بین همه کشورهایی که زندگی کرده بهترین جا برای زندگی هست. ​

!شما خودت هم گفتی که رابطه کاری داشتی یا حتی سفر توریستی رفتی پیش اقوام یا دوستان بودی
من رابطه کاری رو مقایسه نکردم شما هر جای دنیا رو نگاه کنی شرکتها برای منافعشون فعالیت میکنند معلومه رابطه خوبی با شریک تجاریشون برقرار می کنند یا زمانی که بصورت توریستی کسی بره جایی بگرده تا حد بسیار زیادی رابطه خوبی باهاش برقرار میشه ولی سطح زندگی با اینها بسیار متفاوت هست، خیلی تفاوت داره
!شما بدون استفاده از اقوام و دوستان یا شریک کاری بین المللی خودتون برید به یکی از کشورهای اسکاندیناوی برای زندگی، مدتی بمونید و سطح روابط رو مقایسه کنید
تمامی کشورهای اسکاندیناوی سطوح مناسبی برای زندگی در طولانی مدت را نسبت به ایران دارن نسبت به کانادا هرگز
شما یک کشور تک فرهنگی رو با کانادا مقایسه می کنید مسلما شما در بین مردمان این کشور دچار مشکلات خواهی شد، کانادا یکی از بزرگترین مزیتهاش همین چند فرهنگی بودنش هست

Guys and ladies, just got back from Canada after a 2.5 months long stay. My initial plan was to land and then to come back to Bangladesh. Just want to give some of my thoughts about Canada (these are exclusively my private thoughts)

1. Canada is a beautiful/scenic country. Everything is so organized and clean. Living standard is awesome. I lived my whole time in Toronto and i heard the western part of Canada is even nicer. So, great place to live - no doubt.

2. Canada has a fantastic welfare system under which poor/unable people can easily lead their life without the need of working even. Besides such welfare, they have good benefit from Government that would provide level of assistance to its residents, especially those newly landed.

3. School system is great. I have relatives there whose kids are going to school. I have a 3 years old and may be someday he would go school there as well. But i observed the system very closely this time and i just loved it.

4. It has a strong Bangladeshi presence in some part of Toronto. Not all. However, you still can get deshi food, spices, vegetables, fishes etc. However, they are rather costlier than usual foods there. Halal foods are also available at most places.

Now the other side of the coin:

5. Living in Canada is very expensive. Prices of commodities/services are more expensive than that of other neighboring country such as USA. I lived in USA for 10 years when i was student there. And everything is automatically 1.5 times more expensive in Canada, if not more.

6. Tax is more. Canada runs on more of a socialistic system and government takes care of a lot of basic needs. That is why, you pay more taxes. But, yeah, they give you all the support you need to survive at least.

7. Everything is somewhat more bureaucratic in Canada. From simple thing to get a phone line to open a bank account. You need to produce a lot of paper works. However, once you get your PR card, things get easier i believe. But all the service charges are really high compare to USA or even Bangladesh. Mobile phone plans are ridiculously high. Wireless coverage is not that strong either. I went out of Toronto several times to surrounding cities and even the best telecom provider there (Rogers) used go on and off. Bank tries to charge a healthy amount of service charges just to maintain an account with them. Once again i am just comparing with Bangladesh and USA here. Europe is much more expensive than Canada, no doubt.

8. Immigrants are less likely to find jobs at their field of expertise. Overall, there is a shortage of employment in Canada. I tried checking out some employment magazines and in 80% of it was filled with training course/skill enhancement offers from colleges and institutes; rather than real job postings. Odd jobs are there; but even those are hard to find sometime since there are long waiting for that.

9. Life style is very lethargic or should i say slow? People are very laid back down there compare to any part of the world i have visited. They move slowly, walk slowly - may be because they have sense of security within themselves. So, no rush in doing anything. I kinda grew up in a very fast paced life in US. Also, i believe Dhaka is even more lively in some cases. It sometimes fell to me there are no people around. Its so quite. All together in Canada (the second largest country in the world) population is around 3 crore. I think Dhaka has almost 3 crore people itself!

It seems to me if USA is regular Coca-Cola; then Canada is DIET Coca-Cola! Just to compare...

But, i loved it there. 2.5 months went by real quick. and i am surely would not abonded my plan to settle in Canada down the road. But i think i need to be little older to be adjusted in that life style. May be in another 10-12 years. Till then, i plan to keep the residency somehow.

Just my thoughts... once again, i love Canada and i consider this as my second home now -no question about that.

به شدت در حال کار به روی کتگوری های دیگه هست
یعنی الان برای بررسی و فاینالایز کتگوری های دیگه دستور
دارن و خیلی فشرده و متمرکز دارن روشون کار میکنن
البته منظورم پاس رکوئست نیست
این پروسه اش سوا انجام میشه و به دلیل محدودیت زمانی که ماهیتش داره
به صورت مجزا همیشه انجام میشه فارغ از الویت بندی ها
از دید شخصی من باید یه کم بیشتر صبر کنین
تا اونجا که من خبر دارم این کتگوری ها تعدادشون زیاد نیست
و به زودی از شرشون خلاص میشن و اونوقته که میان سراغ شماها
و کلیه اسکیلد ورکرها​
