Not true, you can continue work on implied status : provided you applied for an extension while your work permit was valid. Implied status is time period between your old and new status. If you you were student and applied for study permit extension then you will be on Implied Student status...

I think thats what I'd do. as you were not present in Canada during 2012 and 13 you weren't required to file taxes.
