Well, you don't need a US visa or flag pole. A flagpole is a letter which is like refusal to entry in USA. So you will return back to Canada and enter again in Canadian border.

I am not sure about On foot. But you can call Border Security Customer Care Number and ask them. Next 1000 island is operating 24 hours and 7 days a week(as they told me). so you are good to go on weekend too.
