Work remotely from Canada for US Employer

Yeah what a mess. To me seems like as long as you file and disclose all income you will be fine. If they audit and ask for ccorections etc. it would be extra work but at the end of the day IRS and CRA will have to agree due to the treaty and not double tax you. Seems like it is easier to...

Work remotely from Canada for US Employer

Does CRA have a way of knowing if you are a commuter? Anyway most of these "commuters" are now fully remote anyway. I guess if the worst case is to pay double taxes that is OK with me. I just wanna make sure there are no other complications as per labor laws etc.

Please visit this link - quoting the relevant part - https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tips/using-the-united-states-canada-income-tax-treaty-to-reduce-double-taxation-6229 " Taxes Paid in the United States If taxes were deducted from your income, you can claim those taxes as if you paid them to the...

Work remotely from Canada for US Employer

Cross borer commuters have been doing it for decades and no one ever has gotten in to trouble with CRA. That literally is the purpose of the tax treaty to avoid double taxation - it makes labor movement easier. I am frustrated how not a single person can point to a solid example or tax code but...

Work remotely from Canada for US Employer

If you file your Canadian taxes as a resident, and U.S. taxes as a non-resident, then wy would there be an issue. Tax treaty between the two countries takes care of the taxes and why would CRA have an issue then?

US citizen in Canada (PR) working for US company as an FTE paid into US Bank

Thanks! I understand you not making the move given your citizenship application. However, I cant help but wonder so many cross border commuters MUST be doing this. USC working on W2 in the U.S. and living in Canada. Given most of them successfully get their Canadian PR renwal/citizenship...

Work remotely from Canada for US Employer

Thanks for finding this thread. I am still surprised at the use of term "illegal", usually these things are black and white. Either it is illegal or it is not. Very surprised that I can't find a link to the tax law/code on this. Can you claim to CRA that you were not a "tax resident" in Canada...

US citizen in Canada (PR) working for US company as an FTE paid into US Bank

I'm interested in this "illegal" part. There must be a tax law/code that lays out in black and white whether this is illegal or not. To me it doesn't sound illegal from CRA perspective. Anyone got any links for this "illegal" claim? Thanks!

Sure, but it does not simply matter what CRA wants. What does the law say?

Work remotely from Canada for US Employer

Sorry for stupid questions, but based on your comment above, I as wondering: 1. Why would CRA give anyone hard time for this? As long as they disclose the U.S. income and pay any Canadian taxes, they should be OK? Am I missing something obvious here such as implications on being "tax resident"...

    PRO vs tax status?

I agree. But I think the employer may pay her as if she was a U.S. resident. I am no sure if she can file her U.S. taxes as an oversees resident if her employer does so?

    PRO vs tax status?

Hi - my spouse and I are both Canadian PR. I have plenty of days over the minimum PRO for PR renewal. My spouse, is close to completing their PRO. However, they just got a U.S. job offer that lets them work remotely from Canada. I am curious if the U.S. employer considers my spouse a U.S...
