I landed few days after you. I think we were about to see changes next week but its holidays so my guess is first or second week of Jan there will be any changes probably.

Well its not a issue. US don't care about our status unless we have valid Visa for US. COPR will be required while entering Canada only. You will need PR card if you are taking flight to Canada from states.

I was able to do it after 6 hours of landing

you need US visa to enter into states and you need COPR while entering into Canada which includes crossing border by car. I often go to states and return by only COPR.
