What if the unemployment period is kinda long? (e.g. longer than one year)

Do I need to explain about my unemployed periods? Should I include some sort of letter of explanation explaining what I was doing during those periods?

CIC asks us all kinds of history covering the last 10 years, but does this mean that we date back to 10 years ago from the day we are entering the details?
