Just an update on this for others: CIC web form doesn't let you submit without ONE of UCI or Application Number. I have neither so looks like I just have to wait for the application to be returned in order to re-submit.

CIC website has some overall timeline information usually. You can see if there are any tracking websites for student visa category where other students have posted their timelines.

You should talk to your company lawyer. Usually they put together a stack of papers with all that is required (or nice to have). You need to take as many documents as possible, especially the first time. Job offer, degrees, transcripts, I797, etc

Your best bet is to sign a lease with your husband's friend. You can find lease templates online. Some provinces (like BC) have tenant agreement templates online so it will be super easy. Good luck.
