I wish I had answers for you :( From what I understand you can sponsor them both at the same time. Did you adopt the child? Is that a possibility? That may speed up the process, but I'm not 100% sure. I wish I could offer more advise. At least this will give your question a friendly bump :)

Last July we were notified that we were AIP. We received both letters. On ECAS they had recorded the date they received my American Husband's PR App, the date they started processing his App, and the blurb "We have sent a letter notifying you that you have been approved in Principle etc etc)...
