First stage approval is when the the sponsor has been approved to sponsor the applicant. not sure what they look at whether there background check of the sponsor, but they do look to see if the sponsor is on social assistance.... in general the next step is that the application will be sent...

I have a freind who did his sponsorship from pakistan and his was approved in 4 to 5 months. im not sure if that unique case. His spouse was in pakistan, seemed to be straightforward case.... don't know details of his case but... there are no guarrantees with immigration as you can read...
