I sent them a copy of my passport with my original application as well and they still asked for it. You didn't jump the gun. I think it's more of some verification process for them. Who knows! lol

With me they only requested a photo copy of my Passport, which I emailed to them. So it was pretty straight forward. From what I understand, if they do request for your physical passport, they will return it to you with your COPR, since you would need it to enter Canada.

I don't think you're overdoing it at all. With my application I included 69 pages of "Additional Proof of Relationship", and 31 pages of pictures (which were two or three pictures to a page). I also typed up a summary of our relationship that referenced to the pictures and the additional proof...
