I personally checked both CAIPS and GCMS. Just leave the reference number blank. Put the immigration office name as Buffalo if your file is there. Just put the file number, that will do.

You have to send the application via mail only. It takes 4-6 weeks to arrive.

You will be notified the receipt of application by CIC when they will send the File Number to you which is called AOR ( Acknowledgement of Receipt ). The average time for AOR is 2-3 months after sending the application.
