I have gone through a similar situation and the Immigration Officer was very clear that IELTS should be valid not only when you receive the nomination but also when you apply to CIC after ITA. That is, while making the nomination decision, the officer will expect you to have at least two months...

Here's what I think and am planning to do with my old passport. You have 4MB max size limit for each document. So try to upload old passport if the file size is within limits. If file size is more than 4MB, include the old passport pages in "Letter Of Explanation" doc. HTH
