you can send in the letter from CIC and apply to change your status to visitor. they will ask when you want to extend it to, you just need to give them a time that you think you will land for sure, and explain your reasons. my student status expired july 2011, i changed it to visitor till dec...

my ECAS says the same as you, but i've called them yesterday and they said my application was approved, so i think the same for yours. they also said that it takes 5 days for me to get the letter, so i assume also the same for you. don't worry, you are ok!
