But, you can apply for a Certificate of Identity while you're waiting for your approval. you can use it to travel. I did that before I became a protected person.

Well, on the application check list it says " inclose any previous travel document,(certificate of identity, or refugee travel document) that is not expired and issued to you"

Thanks for the prompt response, I understand that I will write the number and the issue date on the application form, but do I need to send the original expired RTD?
