Passport expiring this year

Hi all,

To give you guys some background, I applied for Canadian citizenship (online) on Dec 17th 2021 and have received AOR on 17th Feb 2022.
My Indian passport is expiring this year on Dec 2022 and I plan to travel on Dec.

My question is whether I can renew my passport when my citizenship application is still "in-progress" ?
How long does it take usually take from citizenship application to getting passport? (I would also need to get OCI which takes about 2 months )
Anyone in a similar situation before?

Quote a few who would be in a similar situation. According to IRCC, the onus is on the applicant to ensure they have a valid passport and PR card for their travels. From citizenship application to passport, can take a few months to a few years. No one can give you an accurate estimate.
Then you have to add, your Indian citizenship surrender, OCI / visit visa, which adds a few weeks more.
There is nothing that prevents you from renewing your Indian passport while your application is under process. My guess is that don’t plan to travel in December on a Canadian passport, if you must travel in December.

Thanks for your reply Akbar, So I can renew my passport that would not have any affect on the current citizenship process right? ( i am thinking background check and stuff)
I dont plan on traveling with Canadian passport, if I get invited for Oath ( that is if I pass the test) can i request to postpone it to next year? As I think we would have to cut off PR card during Oath.

basically write an explanation why you cannot attend the event to IRCC office and they will reschedule it.

Renewing your passport is not likely to cause any delay. You will only have a new number for your travel documents. None of your other particulars like name, DOB, place of birth, parents name etc won't change. These are the more important factors for BG check as compared to PP #.

PR card will be destroyed during online oath, while if in person oath resumes later in the year, you will have to discard it in a bin at the venue.

Also, if you are a little ambitious, you could also check out the thread where citizenship oath outside Canada is being discussed. Not that I would suggest that option to anyone
