Hello,

I moved from US to Canada in Oct 2021 on PR. I'm not entirely sure how the tax filing for 2021-2022 will work and was wondering if anyone knows of people who are familiar with the rules and can help file the tax.
Someone who isn't too expensive but can help out in the Toronto area would be great. My case is fairly straightforward apart from this move across countries. Any CPAs or organizations (like H&R Block in the US) that you'd recommend would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!

I had to do the same, I moved from US in Sep 2018. You will need to file 2 seperate taxes, for US from Jan 2021 to Oct 2021, and Canada Oct 2021 to Dec 2021. You just need do declare income of each respective country on the tax return. For example, you don't have to declare Canadian income on US return because you changed your tax residency.

Use TurboTax, it is available separately for US and Canada. Quite straightforward.

If you moved and already had a job in Canada, you can also deduct moving expenses on your Canadian tax return.

Thanks for the response! So would that be purchasing Turbotax twice - once for US and once for Canada? Or is there some Turbotax international version that does all this?

You end up purchasing twice, one for Canada and Other for US.

Hi,
I am in same boat and moved to Canada on Sep 2021 and was on H1b in US. Did you file your return yet?
Also did you add any US income in Canadian return or vice versa?

Hi,

I was working in the US on a H1B and relocated to Canada on a PR on October, 2021.

I originally crossed US-Canada land border in Feb, 2021, activated my COPR, and then immediately returned back to the US on the same day.

It was not until October, 2021 that I formally landed and took a permanent residence in Canada.

My query - When filing taxes in Canada, do I have to report my US income from the date of border crossing (Feb, 2021) when I simply activated the CoPR or from the date of actual landing(Oct, 2021). I took new employment, got my SIN, opened Bank Account in Canada only after I landed in October. For tax purposes I wanted to understand if I'll be considered a tax resident from Oct, 2021 or Feb, 2021.

Also, I made equity transactions on Robinhood both before and after I entered Canada in October. I'd imagine, I'll be required to report my stock gains/losses only for transactions made following my entry in October, 2021?

Thanks in advance!
