Leave Canada during final stages Common-Law Sponsorship Application

Hi all,

I am an inland applicant for the Common-Law Sponsorship program and so I've been waiting for my PR. My file has been taking forever and after waiting for 10 months, I finally got in touch through my local MP last week who inquired about my file and only was able to hear back that 'they hadn't started it yet'. My current work permit expires in June this year, and so I will have to extend it if my PR hasn't come through by then. Lots of fun, so to speak. Even with my application being delayed, and in case it is not sent back to my address, I should at least be fairly close to get my PR at this point, and so if all goes somewhat well, I think by the time this summer hits, I should have it.

My main question is regarding a potential work trip of 3 weeks in April, during which I should leave Canada. I wonder if there are any risks involved as this could be during the final stages of my PR application, and what they all could be. Are there any people that have done this during that time and experienced issues or delays because of that? What are the potential risks?

If you keep it to 3 weeks or less, there shouldn't be any issues.

Two additional points to add to my first comment above.. (1) You'll need an eTA or valid TRV to return; (2) If this trip happens after you become a PR then you'll need either your PR card or a valid PRTD to return (or alternatively return via the US through a land border).

@scylla thanks. Is there any way in delaying the landing process in case I receive a confirmation right before my trip? Be advised I already have medical and biometrics done a while ago, and albeit normally not valid anymore, due to covid reasons these are potentially still considered valid for that reason, so I might not have to do those.
