Hi everyone,

Im getting married in 4 months. I have been searching online for a week but I still need guidance.

Here is what I found:
- Im eligible to be a sponsor
- I must be in Canada when I submit the application
- I can do the dual intent applications (PR + study, work or visit)

what is the best way?I do not want to wait for 12 months for the spouse PR application while we are apart.

if she comes as a visitor, she wont be able to stay with me for more than 6 months which means before a decision is made for the PR application.

The open work permit seems to be the best option but Im not sure about the requirements. I remember when I was a student, some of my international classmates were able to get an open work permit for their wives. Is it the same for a permanent resident?

the last option is a study permit which might be a year long but can she come to canada as a student first then submit the PR application because Im the sponsor and I must be residing in Canada. Or apply for both at the same time (but we will be apart for at least 4 months).

Any advice would really help. Thank you all so much in advance!

It does state 12 months however it was just under 5 months for my husband. We live in Australia and are moving to Canada in June. I’m not sure what your best option is but I did want to let you that they aim to have applications that are pretty straightforward completed within 12 months but it can also be much shorter.

Thank you @twinmama15
Did you guys apply while being in Australia? The immigration website says that the PR sponsor must be residing in Canada before they can submit a sponsorship application. It is allowed for citizens but not for permanent residents.

That's correct. If you are a PR you must be physically in Canada at the time you submit the application to sponsor your partner / spouse and must continue to reside in Canada while the application is processed.
