Hi,

I am trying to fill in my address from 2021-11 to 2017-09. Once I enter all the addresses, it says
Your address history is missing days or periods within your eligibility period.
How can I fix this? I am eligible to apply for citizenship as I have been on a work permit from 2017-09 to 2020-01 and then PR from there onwards.

My second question is related to taxes.
It asks for taxes for the last five years, but it auto-populates the dates from 2016-2011, and I cannot edit it. Can you please tell me how to fix this issue? I have filed taxes from 2020-2017 in Canada.

Using pdf fillable form CIT 0002 (10-2020):

For address history you must report the address where you lived for the full five years constituting the "eligibility period." Thus, for example, if you apply tomorrow, and enter 2022-01-18 (January 18, 2022) in response to the "to" date for question 9.a), your address history must list your addresses for January 18, 2017 to January 18, 2022, no gaps. Include any address where you were living outside Canada during this five year time period, even if that was prior to your first arrival in Canada.

For item 12.b), that is the chart to list information about filing income taxes, that will automatically list the previous five tax years: 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017. For each of those years you must check the corresponding yes or no box to report if, for that year, you were required to file a Canadian tax return, and if you did file a Canadian tax return for that year. Again, this is for each of those five years. If you check yes and yes for the four years 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017 that easily meets the tax filing requirements. You can check "yes" required to file and "no" not filed for 2021, no problem (technically, until the tax filing deadline in April, you could check no and no for 2021, since as of now you are not required to file a return for 2021).

If the form automatically populated 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, you must have entered a 2021 "to" date in response to question 9.a) (that date is in turn taken from the "to" date in the physical presence calculation).

Note, if you landed and became a PR in 2020, there was no way you met the physical presence requirement in 2021. Your "to" date must be at least two years after the date of landing, which means in 2022. When you enter a 2022 "to" date, again the tax question will automatically list the previous five tax years: 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, and 2017.

If you are trying to apply online, the same principles apply for the respective questions.

Thank you for the detailed explaination.

Question 9 a) was filled out wrongly therefore it had all the problems. But once I put today's date it solves the problem. However, for question 9 a) it auto populates the from date: 2017-01-18. However, I entered Canada on WP in September. Is there anything that I need to do here to fix the "from" field?

Also, in the online CIC calculator, should I enter the date I landed in Canada on WP OR the day I received the WP (as mentioned on the WP) for calculation until I became a PR.

The "from" date is automatically filled in based on the "to" date; the "eligibility period" is five years based on the date of the application. So, if the "to" date is 2022-01-18 the "from" date is 2017-01-18, that is five years ago to the day. So no, there is nothing to fix.

That period establishes the time period for which you need to report the address where you lived and your employment, which can (and for you apparently it does) include address and work history for a period of time before you came to Canada.

Also, in the online CIC calculator, should I enter the date I landed in Canada on WP OR the day I received the WP (as mentioned on the WP) for calculation until I became a PR.
I am not clear where in the presence calculator you have a question about. It should be fairly clear where you enter information, including dates, as to what your status in Canada was, versus where you enter the dates you were in/outside Canada (travel history) while you had temporary status (such as your WP). Be sure to get this right.

I tend to be a bit anal compared to many, but to me it is best to prepare at least two completely separate drafts (for both the application and the presence calculation), without looking at the other one, and when each is done, carefully review the details in each one separately, and after that, only then carefully compare them to one another. May seem like a lot of extra work. But it can save a lot of anxiety and make things go easier down the road. Like carpentry, measure twice, cut once.

Also, best to have a good margin over the minimum. Many suggest a week to ten days is enough. My sense is it is better to have a minimum margin of at least a month. Here too, this can save a lot of worrying and make things go easier down the road.

Someone please help with my inquiry.
I am about to submit my citizenship application, my eligibility period is from June 2018 until date. However, for my address history, I lived in my aunts place from Sept 2017- Sept 2018, and another apartment from Sept 2018- April 2019. The point is, my eligibility period falls in between the first date (Sept 2017- Sept 2018), should I just start from 2017 when filling my address history?

Start from the eligibility period.
