Hi All,

My brother is applying for a student visa - he already got accepted to his DLI and payed his first semester. Regarding the proof of funds for $14k (He will be coming with his spouse) Can I write a letter stating that me, as his sister, will cover and financially support him while he is studying in Canada? I can present my employment letter and my proof of income.

Just want to know if anyone else has done this before and worked.

Thank you!!

Proof of funds is cash in bank accounts, not an employment letter or proof of income. If he has a spouse, he should be showing his own funds as an adult. So do you have a minimum of $14k in your bank account? If so you can gift him all the money through a gift deed.

Hi Naturgrl

responding to where we left off.

My brother got accepted to a DLI in December last year to learn English. His program is 1 year and 3 months.
He is applying to come with his wife and apply for SOWP at the same time.

He will be taking a 2 year diploma after completing the English one so it can count toward the PGWP (Although we will apply for this later)

We have worked on the application and these are the main documents we have so far:

1. The forms which are requested by IRCC
2. Proof of funds $10k for the applicant and 4k for his wife ( he was able to gather the money)
3. Marriage certificate translated
4. Pictures and proof of relationship
5. Letter explaining the reason to come to Canada and Study + His wife's letter as well
6. My brother will be living with me at my house, so he won't be paying rent. I will make a letter stating this.
7. Passports pictures etc

Any suggestions to add something else that will help for his application and his wife's to get approved?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

1. Should note his spouse will not be eligible for a SOWP when he is taking his ESL course. He will not be able to work off-Campus will studying English.

As already noted a spouse can not accompany you for English lessons. Spouses of international students are also not guaranteed permits or visas. Do you have proof that you have the funds to pay for his studies if he isn’t able to work. It sounds like you may be close to exhausting your savings after the English course.

Hi
Hi,

can you kindly advise where I can find this information in the Canadian offcial site? I read everything and couldn’t find a space where it said this.

Just want to go back to that part and see what I missed.

Because he is taking an ESL course it is considered general interest and not an academic program. Is the ELS course also a pre-requisite for the program too?

Work off Campus

Ineligible programs of study
Students are not eligible for the off-campus work permit program if either of the following applies:

  • they are registered in a general interest program of study that does not meet the definition of an academic, professional or vocational training program as defined above (for instance, ESL/FSL courses for self-improvement)
  • they are undertaking a course or program of study that is a prerequisite to their enrolment at a DLI
https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/corporate/publications-manuals/operational-bulletins-manuals/temporary-residents/study-permits/campus-work.html

Since ESL is not considered and academic program, then the spouse is not eligible for SOWP.

Hello, people who made bulk or huge deposit amount of money on their accounts before applying for a study permit and proved its source...do the visa officer ask you again your bank statement after a period of time since you applied to prove him that you still have the money in your account?
