Hi,
I have a question about Group of five sponsorship. My Ethiopian sister married an Eritrean man who is a refugee in Ethiopia. I was wondering if i can still sponsor them under the group of five program.
The reason i am asking this is because on the cic page i read something like for the process to be accepted the officer needs to be convinced that the applicant is " in an imminent danger". Given he is married to a citizen of the country where he seeks asylum, will he still be considered as a person in an imminent danger?

Please let me know if you or someone you know go through a similar situation regardless of the country.

Also if there is an existing forum related to my question, please let me know.

Thanks everyone.
Happy 2022

I would recommend you read through the guide if you haven't done so already. This should help you to make a decision.

My two cents is that it will be difficult to get approved since you'll have trouble proving he doesn't have another durable solution given he's married to your sister who is Ethiopian. See the below from the guide which is a criteria he would need to meet.
  • and does not have a prospect of another durable solution, within a reasonable period of time, that is:
    • cannot return to their country of nationality or habitual residence
    • cannot integrate in the country of refuge or the country of first asylum; and
    • does not have another offer of resettlement from a country other than Canada.

His status is still a refugee. If he will be the main applicant, you can absolutely sponsor them.
Thank you Philips120. Really appreciate your advice.

Thank you scylla, that was also my impression at first when i read about the program a while back. But someone i know told me that it is possible and there are even people who had a successful outcome for the same scenario. Even though i was skeptical about it decided to bring it here for more clarification.

I appreciate your help.
