Hello, I applied for my PGWP (open work permit) from outside Canada and I received the letter of introduction stating my application is approved, in October 2020 and I also got my passport stamped with the TRV in Dec 2020. According to the letter of introduction, I am allowed to enter Canada by 30th March 2021 and my actual work permit will be issued at the border upon entry.
My question is, what will the duration of my work permit be? Is my permit only valid till 30th March 2021?
Can I enter Canada if I have a job offer letter? How long can I work till?

Please help! Thank you.

How long is your expected PGWP since it was approved in October 2020 (how long was your Canadian program)?

Hi,
The duration of your work permit will be decided by the immigration officers upon your entry to Canada and you don't need a job offer letter to enter Canada since you've applied for a post-graduation work permit.
From where did you apply? I applied on 29th May 2021 from India and my application is still under review eligibility.
Also would be good if you could provide your file number which starts with "W" so that I can get a rough idea of when I can expect my file to be processed.
Appreciate your response.
Thanks!

Usually, you'll get a 3 year work permit if your course duration was 2 years but you'll get a hard copy of your work permit at the Port of Entry in Canada.

Think the question is also about the fact that visa was approved a year ago so OP wonders how long the permit will be.

My program was for 16 months without any scheduled breaks.

Exactly! It's a slightly strange case, at least I have not been able to find anyone who was in a similar situation.

I applied online from the US. As in, my country of residence when I submitted the application was US (I was on a visitor visa temporarily). I gave my biometric from the US too. This was in July 2020. Then, I came to India in August 2020. In October, I got the status update that my application was approved and my passport was needed for the TRV. So I sent my passport to the New Delhi office, in December which came back stamped with the TRV within 2 weeks.
Honestly, I would say my application was processed pretty quickly from the New York office, which was still functioning normally in those months. Offices in India were closed for a bit because of COVID, right, so I've read online that they're taking a lot longer than usual to process applications made from India.

If I may ask, how long did it take to process your application? Did you submit another application for the TRV? And if possible, from where did you submit your application?

@yafaa1993 ^ the timeline is here — to answer your question again, it took about 4 months for it to get processed. No, if you apply from outside Canada, you don't need to apply for a TRV separately. They will directly ask you for your passport. I submitted my application online from the US.

As far as I know, 16 months of your program counts as 2 years. I think your TRV should also have a validity of 2 years. So you should be getting a PGWP for 3 years but the final decision will be taken by the immigration officer at the PoE. So the exact length of your PGWP will be determined by the immigration officer when you land in Canada.

@karim_panjwani my TRV is also valid till 30th March 2022. That's why I'm a bit concerned. Would you know if we can apply for an extension for the TRV?
Also, what is your case? Are you just waiting for the PGWP to get approved to go back?

You can only ask for an extension once you are in Canada.
