Hi everyone,

I recently graduated from McGill in Montreal and I got my open work permit for three years. However, I have a condition in my work permit that states that I am not authorized to work in health service field occupations.
Now I want to work as a pharmacy assistant in Shoppers, am I allowed or not? Also someone told me I need to do a full medical checkup and reapply again for the work permit to be allowed to work as a pharmacy assistant and remove this condition. Is this true?! Knowing that I will only work as a pharmacy ASSISTANT not a pharmacist and not a technician.
Thank you!

Yes - you need to complete a medical and then get your work permit modified / updated to allow you to work in the medical field.

Any profession where you will have contact with people who are more medically vulnerable like children, elderly, sick people, etc. need the condition removed. Working in a pharmacy will certainly put you in contact with medically vulnerable people.

So another question please
Will they charge me the full fees for a new work permit at the borders to do the modification?

Hello every one, I have the similar question.

I have read Canada immigration website for all the details about jobs for which you need a medical exam (https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/application/medical-police/medical-exams/requirements-temporary-residents.html).

I am an international student and I want to work as a pharmacy delivery driver. This pharmacy is in a hospital. I tried hard to find this job which is up to 20 hours per week and I should start my job this Monday.

There is no condition in my permit that states that I am not authorized to work in health service field occupations, but I have not applied for medical exam till now.
Excuse me, for this job, should I apply for medical exam? Who is responsible for determining the need for doing medical exam? (Employer or employee?) My employer didn't want me to do medical exam, in this case should I do it and add an amendment to my permit? I am really disappointed because of the ambiguity in this rule.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

No! You don’t need it. It really depends on the type of work that you do. If you are not in a close contact, according to IRCC’s website then you don’t need it.

Hi my work permit has the same condition and I already started the process to remove it. However, I want to apply for a position called "Youth Worker". This position works with persons with behavioral issues, mental health problems. Providing care, support and role modelling in a residential setting.

Would this position would be considered worker in health care setting? Would it be considered close contact?

Thanks in advance

Yes, you need the medical restriction removed from your work permit to work in this job.
