Hi all,
We are currently PR and planning to apply to be a citizen in the future. My understanding, at one point, we have to surrender our PR card. Anyone can tell me when do we need to surrender the card?

Currently, it takes 15 months to be a citizen, I'm assuming, we should surrender PR card toward the end of the 15 months process?

Thanks all!

You don't surrender your PR. You become a Canadian citizen. During the citizenship oath you (or they) cut the PR card(s)

Apparently I have a few more questions if you don't mind:
1. Does citizenship oath ceremony is being conducted regularly like once a month with a group of new citizens as well? Or, as soon as our citizenship application is being approved, we are going to do the oath individually with the official?
2. Can we apply to get passport as soon as we become citizen?

1- Oath is now conducted virtually (i.e., online) and regularly (these days there are 2 oath ceremonies a day, 5 days a week). Once your applications is approved, you will be assigned an oath date with others.
2- Yes, after you do the oath, you will receive the citizenship certificate (these days it takes between 2-4 weeks to be delivered by mail), which you will need to apply for the passport.

@CaBeaver

Apparently I have another question regarding citizenship process. I hope you don't mind.

Does citizenship exam the culmination/the last part of the process? If so, currently the time to process citizenship application is 15 months, is that include the exam? If so and if the citizenship exam is the last part of the process:
1. Do we need to sit for the exam close to the end of the 15 months?
2. Do they conduct the exam regularly once a month on a specific date only or whenever anyone needs to go for the exam?
3. Due to covid, are they conducting an online exam instead?
2. How soon after we passed the exam that we can do the oath?

Much thx!!

You are worried prematurely. I suggest to first prepare your application and submit it, and then worry one step at a time. Also, things may change during the processing of your application, and the current answers may not be valid to your case. But here are the answers to your questions
1- No. Exam is done in the middle I would say. I did my test after 18 months from submitting my application, and 7 months later and I am still waiting for the oath. They say the processing time is 12 months (not 15 months), which may be the time it will take your application, but this time is pre-covid-19, and many applicants, including myself, have been waiting for much longer than that.
2- The exam is done online and regularly. They will assign a window for you (21 days) during which you can do the exam at any time or day that suit you.
3- Yes, the test now is done online.
4- I would say 8 months, but it may take less or more than that. No one knows in advance and why the significant discrepancies between applications.

I just want to know what the whole process and timeline looks like due to our particular circumstances that I'm not at liberty to share it here. I understand the process may change in the future.

I believe I should choose citizenship grant when I check processing time as it shows 12 months? I chose citizenship certificate which shows 15 months. That said, do we need the certificate to apply for passport? If so, we need to wait for another 15 months, after we becoming a citizen, before we can apply for a passport?

Also, in theory and/or pre-covid, 12 months is the total time up to the oath time, but in reality, it may takes much longer than that. In your case, it has been 25 months already.

After the oath, you will receive your certificate 2-4 weeks after the oath to your mail address on file, and yes, you need it to apply for the passport. After you get your original certificate, and you want to issue another one say due to losing the first one, it will take 15 months.
From what I see on these forums, the process is different for 2019 and early 2020 applicants. Many 2021 applicants seem to finish within 12 months (from application submission to oath). IRCC seems to pay more attention to recent applicants because they have a target to meet each each. I was with the unlucky batch whose year's target was NOT met by IRCC, and IRCC moved on to other later applicants trying to meet the target of later years. So, yes in theory your application may take 12 months in total, with a chance of being delayed for longer. No one knows what will happen.
