Hi I'm a permanent resident of Canada.

I have a dependant child living abroad, he is under 14 year old and I want to bring him here to Canada as a visitor so that he can stay more than 6 months and then sponsor permanent residency for him.

is this possible? I am asking because I see that visitors in general are not allowed to stay here in Canada longer than 6 months, but I think that I'll need more time, he is my son and I want to bring him to here, more or less establish life for him here, prepare family sponsorship application etc.

Is it possible to do? What are the steps to make this happen? Where I should start?

If you are PR then you would have included him in your original application. Why wasn’t this done.

He needs a visa, but how can get it? Can I apply from within Canada? I can get his passport to here to stamp a visa. But which form do I need to file and would it be possible to have him here for more than six months?

If you didn’t include your child in your PR application then it is most likely you can never sponsor your child (except under certain circumstances). Your child applies for a visitor visa showing funds, ties to home country. Your child will not be able to attend school or access health care.

I think what's being asked is if you declared this child in your PR application and if the child was medically examined as part of your PR application. This is necessary in order to sponsor that child for PR. Of course it's possible the child wasn't born yet when you landed and became a PR.

As others have said, in order to bring the child to Canada, you need to apply for a TRV. If the TRV is approved, the child can then travel to Canada and remain in Canada until PR is approved. You may need to apply for an extension to keep the child's status in Canada legal while you wait for the application to be finalized.

Apply for visitor visa from where he is. You can fill in the form and apply as a parent. You can apply to extend his stay before his 6 months stay is up.

Again, did you include him in your PR application as non-accompany dependent? If you did, you can apply to sponsor him. If not, you cannot sponsor him.

Yes he was in my PR application as a non-accompany dependent for sure. Thanks for this "You can fill in the form and apply as a parent " very helpful.!
Now I also understand that I can apply for extensions, and yeah I think immigration services would extend for another six month for a permanent resident child.

I guess it depends on where are you from, if you dont have to get a visa in advance, basically the officer at the airport can give you more than 6 months. They can extend it till the passport expiration date.

My husband and I just received official confirmation of my step-daughters PR being approved after doing this. Was not a pre-planned process though. She came to visit us for the summer in 2018 from Jamaica, after being granted a visitors visa. They never stamped her passport when she arrived. Her mother basically told us to keep her so that she could go to the US on a work program. We filed for PR w/ my husband sponsoring her in September of 2018. We naively assumed she could stay her for the duration of her visa which expires in 2022. In any event, we applied as an "inbound", but it ended up being sent to Kingston, JA as an outland application. Covid caused a long delay in things, before we heard in August it was approved and being sent to our local office for finalization. Just received the email yesterday with instructions to upload stuff to the PR portal. I don't think it's the encouraged way to to go about it, but in some instances it is necessary.
