Hi guys, if you spend 2 years out of 5 and renew your PR for another 5 years and spend a 3rd year in Canada from this new 5 years of new PR, will u be eligible apply for citizenship? So what I read is that u should spend 3 years in Canada out of the past 5 years irrespective under which PR. This means if u come on year 4 and 5 to Canada, renew ur Pr and spend 1 more year then it is Ok as the 3 y falls within the past 5 years. Thoughts? Thanks for this community!

After the first 5 years you must be compliant with the 730 days out of 5 years on any day. It is not another 5 year block of time where you must meet the 730 days out of 5 years. You don’t actually renew your PR, you only renew your PR card. Currently if you meet the 3 out of 5 year requirement for citizenship it can be in any 5 year period.

I am not sure I follow. So if you spend 2y out of 5 and then you renew the PR card. What happens next? How u spend the 3rd y for the citizenship?

After 5 years of being a PR in Canada you must meet your residency requirement of 730 days out of 5 years on any day. It is not another 5 year block of time. If there are no changes in the future as long as you meet the 3 years out of 5 requirement you can apply for citizenship.

if you never leave Canada and spend 3 years (1,095 days) in Canada, then you can apply for citizenship. If you left after landing and came back 2 years before the 5 years from landing as a PR to meet RO.
(i.e. landed and only stayed for a few days and then left, then come back before hitting 3 years mark and stay straight for 2 years.)

Then stay for 1 more year to meet the (1095 days) and you can apply for citizenship. It's generally suggested to add buffer of weeks or even a month in case any travel days are missed.

Renew of PR card has nothing to do with citizenship. And renewing your PR card do not "reset" anything. It's just your PR card that you need to travel back to Canada if you travel outside.

Thank you so much. This is super helpful. I really appreciate. Would you mind sharing your thoughts on these 2 points too:
1) When we spend 2 years and renew the PR card, it is usually renewed for 5 years?
2) If I landed and left Canada and came back on year 4 and 5 to spend the 2 years. However, I dont spend the 3rd year right after but 2 years later. In total, I will have a total of 1095 days spent over the last 5 years but in this form:
- Year 1: no days in canada
- Year 2: no days in canada
- Year 3: few days only to gain some buffer
- Year 4: full year spent in Canada
- Year 5: full year spent in Canada
Card renewal for 5 years? as we met the 2 years out of 5
- Year 6: (calling it year 6 of ease of referencing) no days in Canada
- Year 7: no days in canada
- Year 8: full year spent

with the above, 1095 days were spent over the last 5 years. Can u apply for citizenship? Is it how it is calculated or I am totally on a different page?

-2017- Year 5: full year spent in Canada, Card renewal for 5 years? as we met the 2 years out of 5
-2018- Year 6: (calling it year 6 of ease of referencing) no days in Canada
-2019- Year 7: no days in canada

Don’t think you’re still understanding that having your PR card renewed for 5 years is irrelevant when it comes for your RO. You must meet the 730 days out of 5 years on any day to remain compliant with your RO. There is no 2nd year period to meet your RO.

I understand that I need to spend 2 years out of 5 to keep the PR status active/valid, irrespective of the card. Thats fine. What I want to know is about my card specifically. Not sure why you are taking me to another response... it is clear the RO. Anyway I found the answer here: https://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?qnum=057&top=10
Thanks,
