return to Canada with an old permanent resident card

if I send my permanent resident card renewal request, and my new card is sent to my address while I am outside the country, can I return with my old card (not expired yet)?
or is it automatically canceled when the new one is issued? thank you

You need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to re-enter AFAIK.
Maybe some more experienced member can confirm...
