Hey everyone,

Has anyone recently received student permit from within Canada? If so could you please post your timeline?

I am currently in Canada under visitor status and have received my student visa stamp in the passport and Letter of Introduction. Due to covid, I am not able to travel outside of Canada and get the student permit at the port of entry. To cope with this situation, IRCC started a program for in-Canada applicants to mail them their student permit. I requested this since May but have not heard anything yet. I made multiple calls to IRCC and the agents provided no helpful information regarding the status and timeline. They just told me to wait. HOWEVER, I am running out of time since my master program starts in 2 week!

1) If anyone has received their student permit through the same channel, please post your timeline.

2) Does anyone know if I can legally start the program without the student permit and with only the visa stamp and letter of introduction? The IRCC agent said I could but my school is unsure about this.

3) I've considered flagpoling but from what I've read, 1) the border no longer process flagpoling, and 2) flagpoling is normally for renewal of a student permit but not acquiring a new permit. Any thoughts on this option?

4) Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Thank you so much for bearing with me and please share any experience or suggestions!! Very desperate now :(

Unfortunately, I do not see any solution either other than waiting for the letter from IRCC to arrive. I am familiar with the process of flag poling. I cannot say about study permit, but to my knowledge, students used to resort to flag poling to get PGWP before COVID-19. If you are fully vaccinated with two doses and have a valid US visitor visa, you may consider leaving Canada altogether, fly to the US, fly back to Canada the same day, then get study permit at an airport. It is possible to fly back and forth from Toronto to New York or Vancouver to Seattle the same day.

Did you apply inland? My son applied inland on May 23. Got approval June 18. Received the SP hard copy by post 5 working days later.

It sounds like your son is a minor / dependent. If so, this is a different process than how the OP had to apply. The OP had to apply outland. Inland isn't an available option for everyone - only in limited circumstances.

That’s why I was asking if OP applied inland...

They had to apply outland. That's why they received student visa stamp and Letter of Introduction - and now have to follow the special mail in process to get the study visa issued inland.

My apologies then. OP was asking about receiving study permit inside Canada. Mea Culpa if I assumed Op applied inland.

OP has two options, waiting and call IRCC or fly to states and back if OP has valid B1/B2 Visa… Flagpoling is no longer option and OP cannot start studies with TRV before SP is issued. Its tricky and frastruating situation… May be try your local MP, the fact that you are approved, may be they can help…
