Hello, I want to consult a question regarding entering Canada using PR card. My kid's citizenship certificate is mailed after we leave Canada, and we still have PR card on hand. In the application form, we selected "taking oath" for my kid who is under 14. Because of Covid-19, we received an email notifying that the oath ceremony is cancelled and will be rescheduled. While waiting, we leave Canada because of family reason. We had thought to come back to take oath when receiving the reschedule letter. But citizenship certificate is mailed directly. Since we are abroad, the citizenship certificate is in Canada, we are afraid that it will be lost if we courier it. Now we want to return to Canada urgently, so we are wondering if we can enter Canada with current PR card. Hope to hear some suggestions, thank you!

I do not think u can. U are not PR anymore. U need to apply for canadian passport. Usually u are asked to cut PR card during oath ceremony.

Good luck

Just get it shipped through fedex/ups.
Apply for temporary passport.

You must be physically present in Canada to participate in the oath ceremony. During the ceremony, you must physically cut up your PR card in front of an officer. You will no longer be a PR so the card and your PR status will be invalid.

Your best bet would be to stay in Canada after the ceremony until you receive your certificate then apply for an emergency passport.

I'm curious whether they did not ask to send a proof of PR card cut after you attended the oath?
From what I have read on here you have to do it on camera while someone records it.
You would be committing fraud if you attempted to use it after the ceremony and would be in great danger of losing your newly gained Citizenship forever as well.

You will have to cut the PR card in front of the Camera while the IRCC officials are watching. So, I'd strongly recommend you cut the card. You can't use your PR card anyway after you've become a Citizen so please don't take this risk that is ABSOLUTELY unnecessary.

I've already cut the PR card and have been asked to take a photo of the cut PR card to send along with the signed form.

My question was to towards OP how they managed to keep PR card uncut and still received the certificate!

I would recommand to conatc the IRCC to know the procedures to return, Any act without consulting IRCC can push your status to an Edge.
Talk to them , they might have seen some scenarios's like this or even if not they can find out a solution.

If not satisfied with one agent response call again to see if the answer remains same, morever you can call local Canadain Embassy to see what are the Options you have, based on the suggestion you can proceed (becuase if you are going to apply for a passport they are the one who will review your file).

I understand everyone has their reasons to get in to rare situations but yes try calling IRCC and Local canadian Embassy to have more details.

You are free to follow if anyone in the forum suggest you based on their experience as they always does.

Thank you all for your reply. At first ceremony was cancelled due to Covid-19, then it was not arranged again for kid, but we do not know, then certificate was mailed directly. Based on the suggestions, we'll consult for passport application.

Hi,
You have received citizenship certificates for your kids without attending the virtual oath because as per immigration laws kids under 14 don't require to attend the ceremonies and their citizenship certificates are being sent by mail and that is the norms. You need just to send a proof that you have invalidated their PR cards by cutting them. The norms also being the parent, you need to go to the passport office and submit the passport applications for your kids and eventually you as the parent can either receive them in person or by mail, Back to your specifics, what you need to do is to return to Canada (I believe you are a Canadian citizen yourself) apply for your kids passports, receive them then fly back to where your kids are and now your kids can enter the country as Canadian citizens with their newly issued passports. Your kids can't enter Canada anymore with their PR because the PR's in your hand right now are invalid and your kids are no more permanent residence but Canadian citizens.
