Hi Everyone

I have submitted my kid's citizenship application along with my wife's application. Neither of us are Canadian citizens yet. The application package was returned with the reason:

The photocopy of the parent's proof of Canadian citizenship, if applicable, is missing. Refer to instruction guide.

This is what the instruction guide has:

  • One (1) photocopy of proof of the parent’s Canadian citizenship (if applicable)
    Examples include:
    • provincial/territorial birth certificate;
    • certificate of Canadian citizenship;
    • certificate of naturalization;
    • certificate of Registration of Birth Abroad;
    • certificate of retention issued between January 1, 1947 and February 14, 1977.

We don't have any of these. I am confused on why the application was returned and the documents we need to resubmit the application.

Thanks

If your wife applied at the same time with your kid under 5 (2) then none of the above is needed. Did you send your kid birth certificate?

WTH, that's weird. Looks like an administrative error. You can apply for your minor child under 5(2) if at least one parent is applying for citizenship at the same time as the minor.

To be eligible for Canadian citizenship under subsection 5(2), you, the minor:

  • must be under 18 years of age on the day you sign the application;
  • must be a permanent resident (landed immigrant) of Canada;
  • must have at least one parent (includes legally adoptive parent) who is a Canadian citizen or who will become a citizen at the same time as you (applying together as a family);
  • can’t have any unfulfilled conditions relating to their permanent resident status
  • can’t be under a removal order (asked by Canadian officials to leave Canada);
  • can’t be inadmissible or prohibited on criminal or security grounds.
I have a question for you though. Can you please check the documents checklist for minor that you have submitted with your application and let me know if you have (accidentally) checked the box that says "Photocopy of the parent's proof of Canadian Citizenship, if applicable)" checkbox? Because if you checked it by mistake and did not provide that document, that could be the reason why the application was returned.
