Urgent processing - translate death certificate or not?

It's been 24 months since I have applied for Canadian citizenship back in 2019.

My grandfather recently passed away and my grandmother is currently living alone. I'd like to see her as soon as possible, at least by December.

As of now, I don't really want to travel internationally because the IRCC can schedule my test or interview any time.

I am asking for urgent processing but I am debating whether I will need the death certificate translated in English even to make a request. I will have to ask my grandmother to visit the hospital to pick it up, and I do not want her to travel an hour to do this.

Urgent processing can only be requested if you can't travel because you do NOT have the travel document from any other country (stateless) OR you cannot get travel documents from your country of citizenship. Generally, IRCC will NOT approve urgent processing if you simply want the application to be complete so that you can go travel internationally (while having a passport or being able to procure a passport from your country of citizenship) AFAIK.

Recently, there has been an update where the applicants are being allowed to take the test abroad. So, you might want to make the best use of this option. Once you receive the test invitation email when you're abroad, simply send an email to the email ID listed under the 'rescheduling' section and request them to permit you to take the test outside Canada and that request will likely be granted.

Also, not everyone gets an interview requests. These days, interview requests are getting more and more rare.

So, both of these are in your favor. But there is no guarantee that you won't receive an interview.

You just described my case. Technically I can still renew my expired Canadian travel document from Passport Canada. Can the IRCC still reject a request for urgent processing because of this reason? I and my grandmother will meet somewhere in between Canada and there.

I would imagine so, yes, because you can still renew the travel document issued by Canada.

Now, should I ask my grandmother to get the death certificate officially translated in English? Is the IRCC that heartless? Surely they can check the integrity of the original document?

But yes, you have to submit certified translations of any documents that are not in English or French. It is not about being heartless - English and French are the 2 official languages of Canada and the officers wouldn't be able to read the contents of a document that is in neither of those languages.
