CoPR Place of Birth showing state, not city/town

Hello there! During my PR application, I had read online on the IRCC website that I'm supposed to write down my place of birth as per what is shown on my passport. The problem is my passport only contains the state that I was born in (within my country) and not the city/town. I decided to write down my state due to the IRCC website asking to write as is on the passport. Later on, I sent a webform to them to clarify this further that this place of birth is not my town/city fo birth but rather my state of birth but that since it was written on my passport, I chose to put down the state in the application. Furthermore, I also clarified what my city/town of birth was in the inquiry.

I just recently got my CoPR and it is showing my state of birth in the place of birth section as opposed to my city/town of birth that I had clarified with them. In the future, when I apply for citizenship, would this cause a concern? Do I write as is on my CoPR despite it being my state in the place of birth and not city/town or should I write down my actually city/town and clarify all of this again? Should I re-clarify with IRCC again right now in regards to the place of birth on my CoPR?

COPR sometimes contains shortened / incomplete place of birth and this is due to space limitation on the form. I was in the same situation. You should always enter the complete place of birth as shown on passport. In other words, you can enter the place of birth as you entered on your PR application (because in the PR application, you'd have to enter the place of birth exactly as shown on your passport).

Thank you so much for this speedy response! That's great to hear. So it's totally ok to write down the place of birth as per passport on citizenship application even though the passport indicates the state (not city/town) and the application form specifically asks for city/town? Just want to make sure

Yes because you need a valid government issued document to back that up. As for your place of birth, you'll see this information on your COPR and your foreign passport. Your COPR might have incomplete / cut-off place of birth so the obvious choice is to go by what is mentioned in your foreign passport.

Ah that makes sense, thank you so much for this, it's definitely making me feel a lot calmer hahaha. Did you also write down your state of birth as opposed to town/city in your PR/Citizenship applications, as per your passport?

My passport contains both the name of the city and the state so I provided that information as-is.

Ok that's great hahahaha. So since my passport only had my state and not the city name, it was totally fine for me to write down just the state name in the section asking for town/city of birth, thus no need for me to correct this with IRCC

IMO, there is no need to correct as long you've entered that information as per your passport and that is what you provided on your PR application as well.

Ok sounds good! I was just nervous since I won't be entering my city name since they specifically asked for city/town, but i guess the passport place of birth (even though it's just my birth state) overrides all that. Do you think it's okay for me to write a letter clarifying that I entered my state name instead of my town/city name due to my passport only showing my state name and also explaining what my actual city of birth is? When the time comes for me to apply for citizenship~

That wouldn't be necessary IMO but there is no harm in writing one if you see the need.

Why do you wanna go through all that? Whatever ended up being on your passport is official information and is now in CIC records. They don't care about it till the time it matches your documents. So imo, by reaching out and creating paper trails you are just digging yourself in.

I mean I'm just saying.

That makes sense but I did write them a letter in my PR app explaining that the reason why I put in my state as opposed to my town/city in the place of birth section was because the instructions online stated to write that section as per my passport, which only has my state of birth as the place of birth, as opposed to my town/city. This is due to my country's passports all only having the state in the place of birth section and not city/town. My PR application still processed smoothly with all this added info. So I'm wondering if I should repeat this for my citizenship application in the future

Fair enough. It's a decision which is ultimately yours but from my experience dealing with CIC over the years, it's better to avoid unnecessary communication and attention.

And since they already have that information from your PR, they don't need to be notified again. I would 100% leave it alone.
