I'm applying for my PR soon as a protected person (refugee). Do I need a background check from my home country (Romania) ?

I might not be able to obtain one if I don't have any id from my home country which I don't and can't get because of my status here and all of my past Romanian id is expired. Obviously I can't use a passport.

They ask for police checks from places you lived in for 6+ months. People go to different countries all the time to work and stuff so they'd have to get a check for certain applications too. How does it work in this case if they don't have status in those countries?

If I can't obtain a police check from Romania (if it's even needed) because I would need Romanian id which I can no longer get as a refugee, should I just explain that in a letter?

of course they wouldn't ask you for a police certificate from your country of persecution. even if they do, an explanation letter on why you can't provide it would be more than enough..

Thanks for the reply and I wouldn't have known that. Which is why I asked lol. But this is great news then since it takes a long time and our consulate is trash.

no worries. i have a friend who lived in a country other than his home of persecution for 5+ years. he was asked by ircc for a police certificate from this country and the only way to get a police certificate is to travel there and request it since it is a third world country which would cost so much. he wrote a letter to ircc to explain the situation and his pr was processed without any issues. Canada is a very understanding country

Awesome. Yeah, Canada's pretty great sometimes. Very thankful to be here. Really hope they don't ask for one, which you said they most likely will not and I might be unable to get it anyways. It's not hard to get but it takes a looong time so I'd have to prepare myself to request it as soon as I send my PR.

If they do ask and I can't get it, I was just worried about what sort of proof I'd have to submit showing that and if my word in the letter would just be enough. You said it worked for your friend though.
