Quarantine and pets

Hello all.

I'm planning (provided my visa gets approved) to be coming to Canada in mid-August or so. I'll be bringing my cat and dog with me. While the cat would be fine in a hotel room for a couple of weeks, my 25kg dog would go stir crazy spending that long without being walked (not to mention I have no idea how a dog would go to the toilet in a hotel room). Does anybody here have any experience dealing with this, or similar, situations? I'm hoping I can pass the dog to a pet sitter or something after I land and clear customs, but it seems like the rules are that we can't come into contact with anybody until the quarantine is done.

Any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated. I've contacted about half a dozen departments about this so far and still have no clear answer.

Which city will you be arriving at?
This is on the official site:
https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/latest-travel-health-advice/mandatory-hotel-stay-air-travellers/list-government-authorized-hotels-booking.html

Visit the hotel websites to see which options suit your needs (including accessibility, pets and dietary restrictions). Most government-authorized hotels now offer online booking for the mandatory hotel stopover.

May need to contact individual hotels to see if they have pet specific service. (or ground level unit that can let a dog go to a patio level balcony)

And you can likely arrange for other short term rental that has a garden/outdoor space for the rest of your quarantine after the 3 days hotel stay.

For the dog, see if you can arrange with service providers such as the link below so that your dog can be fed, board and walked.

https://www.rondivillskennels.ca

Few years ago, when my dog was still a puppy, I almost use their service. But I ended up using a vet clinic to board my little guy! Btw, be reminded no dog food is allowed to bring into Canada (other from US).

well you should check the current permission and regulations. Just try to google it.

Currently there is no direct flight to Canada. When do you plan to come to Canada?

Currently no plan sooner or until they open flights.

But I wanted to know generally, Can he bring pet in flights or is there some other carrier from where they keep pets.
Like I really wonder how pets get into flight.
or do we have to buy 1 seat for our pet ?

Depend how big your pet is, you will need to contact the airline whether they allow you to bring your pet with you in the cabin (place the animal in a kennel under seat in front of your seat) or you would have to put the pet in a kennel at the baggage compartment. Before you checked in the pet, you will have to show the airline some documents such as rabies certifcation (for a complete list google the Canadian food inspection agency website). Alternatively, you can get a pet relocation company to ship the animal for you.

I recently asked some pet relocation services here (in Hong Kong) about shipping my dog to Canada. I was told that because of COVID, the freight companies have at least trebled their prices, so it was going to cost me about HK$100,000 (about 9 lakh rupees) to ship my dog as unaccompanied freight. The much easier and cheaper option is to take them on the flight with you. If the animal is small, you can usually bring it in the cabin with you but you have to leave it in the container the whole time. You have to keep the animal under the seat rather than on the seat, so you don't have to buy an extra ticket for it.
If it's larger, you have to check it in as you would for oversized luggage and it will be kept in the cargo hold on your flight. I have also been told this is a better option for the animal since the cabin is usually quite bustling and it stresses them out. If they're in the hold, it's quiet and dark and they'll just go to sleep. You do have to be careful that you get a proper crate that meets the requirements set down by IATA (https://www.iata.org/globalassets/iata/programs/live-animals/pet-container-requirements.pdf) or they won't take the animal.

You can find the specific information by checking the airline's website (just google the airline name + "pet") and you'll find the info. Here's a couple to give you an idea:

Air India: http://www.airindia.in/new-pets.htm
Air Canada: https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/plan/special-assistance/pets.html

Hello Agni,
My husband and I are also planning to bring our pet dog to Canada once we get our PR process sorted out. Anyhow, I have been researching thoroughly on the topic. I checked few youtube videos and read some blogs. We plan to take our pet with us and not make her travel separately via an agency.
Just to share some information:
1. AIRLINE SELECTION - According to the weight, breed, age you will have some airline options. E.g. Air Canada, Lufthansa, KLM, Air India. We have a snub-nosed breed so we have fewer airline options. We have chosen Air Canada as they accept our snub nose dog. To choose an airline do go through in-cabin requirements and the hold requirements (pet as extra luggage). Decide the airline and pet's travel option and then accordingly select a soft/ hard kennel for your doggo.
2. TRAIN YOUR PET - Whatever kennel you have chosen, train your pet to feel comfortable in it. Plan on how to make your dog's travel smoother as all animals face travel anxiety. Prepare dog item to carry list - treats, water bottle, toys, poop bags, pee pads, etc. You may research more online as per your dog's needs.
3. EXPORTING YOUR PET - Once you have your tickets booked, get your dog's ticket confirmed as well with the airline by contacting them. Visit your vet for - Dog's Health Certificate, Vaccination Certificate, Pests treatment records, and Microchip Certificate.
With all the Vet documents, your tickets and passport copy, dog's photograph you need to apply for an EXPORT PERMIT from the Indian Govt. Depending on your location you may research the nearest AQCS office. http://aqcsindia.gov.in/export-of-pet-dog-and-cat.html
4. IMPORT FORMALITIES - All the Documents prepared above will be required at the point of entry in Canada. Since India is not a Rabies-free country. It is extremely important to carry your dog's vaccination certificate. More info you may find here https://inspection.canada.ca/animal-health/terrestrial-animals/imports/import-policies/live-animals/pet-imports/eng/1326600389775/1326600500578

Canada does not require your dog's microchipping but the Indian Pet Export Process does. So even though it is not mentioned on Canada Govt.'s website it is required by AQCS for export permit

There is so much more to plan and research but I hope this helps.

P.S - You can not bring Dog Food into Canada from India so be mindful about that.

We are also planning to make a comprehensive Youtube video once we get started with the process. If you wish to get in touch and discuss more you may DM us on Instagram here

I stumbled upon this post and decided to revive this thread. Fortunately, the times of quarantine are over and you'll have more freedom to take care of your dog and enjoy walks together without restrictions. However, if you're looking for additional tips and recommendations for animal care, I highly recommend checking out cutepetcare.com. It's a fantastic resource that provides a wealth of useful information to improve the well-being of your pets. I, personally, find it quite handy and often refer to it when caring for my own furry friends. I'm sure you'll find it helpful too!
